Vatican Radio REPORT- Pope Benedict XVI has sent a Message, through his Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, to the participants in this weekend’s global gathering of young people of the Focolare Movement, called “Genfest”, taking place in the Hungarian city of Budapest. The Message is addressed to Maria Voce, President of the Focolare Movement.

Dear Miss Voce,

The Holy Father was pleased to be informed of the celebration of Genfest 2012, taking place in Budapest from 31 August to 2 September, and he sends heartfelt greetings to all the young people taking part.

His Holiness notes that the city itself is an eloquent symbol, on many levels, of inspirations that bring so many young people together for the celebration entitled Let’s Bridge. The numerous bridges across the Danube, linking the former settlements of Buda and Pest and bringing them into unity, were all destroyed in the wake of the Second World War. Yet out of the ashes of that terrible conflict, there arose a determination to build peace on lasting foundations, a determination which was to be the inspiration behind the founding of the Focolare Movement. The bridges across the Danube were rebuilt, and the international community set itself the goal of eliminating once and for all the conditions that might lead to future conflict.

While Budapest itself, together with much of Eastern Europe, continued to suffer under the oppression of a totalitarian regime, there too, new possibilities for freedom and fraternal outreach have come about since the end of the Cold War. May this beautiful city be a sign of hope to inspire all the young people present to offer the hand of friendship to those from other backgrounds and cultures, “in such a way as to shape the earthly city in unity and peace, rendering it to some degree an anticipation and prefiguration of the undivided city of God” (Caritas in Veritate, 7).

With these sentiments, the Holy Father gladly imparts his Apostolic Blessing to all those taking part in Genfest 2012, as a pledge of lasting peace and joy.

CARDINAL DOLAN'S MESSAGE FROM GOP 2012 CONVENTION: With firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, let us pray. Almighty God, Father of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jesus, we beg your continued blessings on this sanctuary of freedom, and on all of those who proudly call America home,” he began. “We ask your benediction upon those yet to be born, and on those who are about to see you at the end of this life. Bless those families whose ancestors arrived on these shores generations ago, as well as those families that have come recently, to build a better future while weaving their lives into the rich tapestry of America.”
We lift up to your loving care those afflicted by the recent storms, drought, and fire. We ask for the grace to stand in solidarity with all those who suffer. May we strive to include your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free in the production and prosperity of a people so richly blessed.

Protest growing: From 80 to 200 high school students. Massive demonstration of teachers 'unions and parents' representatives scheduled tomorrow. According to the reform, the so-called classes of "national education" will address the major scientific and economic achievements of mainland China.

Hong Kong (AsiaNews) - The peaceful protest of the Territory's high school students against "national education" classes imposed by the communist government on local schools shows no sign of weakening. From the original 80 until yesterday, the number of young people camped in front of the building of the Legislative Council, in the government district of Almanthy is now more than 200. Three of them - the 18 year old Lily Wong Lee-lee, Ivan Lam Long-yin and Kaiser (pictured) - are still on hunger strike, which began more than 24 hours ago. They are pale, but determined to resist until tomorrow, when there will be a great event organized by teachers' unions and parents representatives

The protests in recent days stem from educational reform desired by the Chinese central government in 2002 and launched in 2004. It provides every school - from elementary school onwards - be prepared for non-defined "classes of National Education", a topic that should be treated as a separate subject. From what has so far been said, the subject's aim is to enhance China's great economic scientific and popular achievements, but silence, for example, discusses the Tiananmen massacre..

The first to oppose this reform were Catholics, led by Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, who has repeatedly denounced this move as an attempt to "brainwash" young people orchestrated by Beijing. Now, the general public is mobilising behind the Church: According to a survey carried out by an Association of men's and women's clubs, 74% of the students and 77% of parents surveyed want the government to withdraw the subject from schools and resume consultations with all parties involved before resubmitting it.




Catholic Man Breakfast Series

MORE than 90 men got up early on Thursday 23 August to hear guest speaker Robert Falzon's presentation at the Catholic Man Breakfast hosted by Archbishop Denis Hart. The Catholic Man Breakfast series provides an opportunity to men to gather and be encouraged and inspired in their faith.

A Catholic Man Breakfast Series event involves a cooked breakfast, sharing with other men, and speakers backed by multimedia. It is organised by menALIVE, a national Catholic men’s ministry.

The breakfast at the CQ Function Centre on 23 August was a new experience for me, as it was for most of the 90 + men in attendance. This was the first menALIVE breakfast held in Melbourne and, for most of us, our first menALIVE event. An experience it was, with the theme of Fire in Your Life!

Numbered among those present were leading Victorian Catholic politicians including the Education Minister, The Leader of the Opposition, Heads of Catholic Agencies from the Archdiocese, senior students and principals from three boys schools (Emmanuel College Altona, Mazenod College Mulgrave and Salesian College Chadsone) and many men from the business and Church community.

His Grace Archbishop Denis Hart, hosted the event, said grace and gave a blessing at the end and, in affirming the men present, also challenged them to find ways to “put on Christ” in their daily lives. This set a nice, prayerful tone to the morning.

Most men love a good action movie so it was appropriate that MC, Peter Gabauer played the Russell Crowe Robin Hood movie trailer. With its repeated references to Robin’s father, the trailer struck one of the major themes that affect men – a man’s relationship with his father.
We were asked to share three things about our fathers for which we are grateful. This was not difficult for myself, Peter, and Jack (two men I was sitting near). I mentioned that I was grateful to my father for teaching me hunting and fishing, for raising me as best he could and for encouraging me in my creative interests.

The keynote speaker was menALIVE co-founder, Robert Falzon. He told the story of his life, illustrated by family photos of his wife and four children on the multimedia screen. For most of his life, Robert ran his own manufacturing business, which was twice almost destroyed by fires. His business was ultimately very successful and he sold out to a large company to take on ministry to men in the Church because the question “where are all the men?” was gnawing at him. He is now a full-time volunteer with menALIVE.

During his speech, Robert asked us to think of something in our lives on which we needed to take a stand. This was our next topic for sharing. Peter, Jack and myself readily found things we felt we needed to take a stand on, but our sharing wandered into what we had found most meaningful in Robert’s speech. What had struck me was that in the most difficult moments of Robert’s life he had turned to God with prayer – as he said a few time “to get on your knees and fight like a man".

The event saw Melbourne Catholic men connect with each other, feel inspired, and be challenged. The next menALIVE Melbourne Catholic Man Breakfast Series event will be in March 2013.

MOLO, August 31, 2012 (CISA) – The laity in the Catholic Church has been urged to participate fully in evangelization.
Director of The Blessed John Paul II Evangelizing parish teams church movement, Professor Peter Kiarie said that the Second African Synod, held in Rome in 2009 and whose report was presented to the Church in Africa by Pope Benedict November 2011 “empowers” the lay people in the church to participate in evangelization work.
Professor Kiarie was officially opening a three-day workshop (August 16-19), organized by The Blessed John Paul II Evangelizing Parish Teams Movement and held at Ukarimu Centre-Incarnate Sisters, Molo.
The theme of the workshop was “Be Missionaries to yourself-Pope Paul VI-Uganda-I969” and was attended by 56 participants, drawn from various dioceses in the country.
“The laity must be very active in evangelization as stipulated by the Second African Synod,” said Prof Kiarie.
He said the spirituality of Blessed John II is of the new evangelization which Pope Benedict VI has adopted.
In his recent address Pope Benedict XVI emphasized that new evangelization requires a change in mentality, particularly with regard to the role of the laity in the Church, who should be considered not as “collaborators” with the clergy, but as persons truly “co-responsible” for the being and activity of the Church, said Prof Kiarie while quoting the Pope.
“It is important, therefore, that a mature and committed laity be united, who are able to make their own specific contribution to the Church’s mission,” added Prof Kairie.
Religious teacher, Simon Rurinjah presented a paper on how to make Small Christian Communities (SCCs) evangelistic.
He said some people are failing to attend the SCCs meeting because of their thirty for money.
Father Joachim Omolo Ouko, AJ stressed the centrality of parental care within families. The list of parental responsibilities, which he described as fundamental survival of family included care and control of the child, discipline, protection and maintenance, secular education and religious upbringing, medical treatment and consent to marriage.
The workshop was also addressed by the Spiritual director of the Movement, Father Richard Quinn, a Maryknoll missionary priest.
“We must train and form our people on how to evangelize in our Small Christian Communities. We must know and learn how to dialogue with Muslims, work and show with them our love, even though we must be most vocal in claiming our rights and denouncing any false teaching and insults against our faith,” he emphasized.
Father Eustaki Tarimo, Vicar General and Dean, Arusha Archdiocese, Tanzania stressed the need for effective co-existence between the Catholics and people of other faith, Muslims included.

An Abbot, said to have been born of illustrious Athenian parentage about the middle of the seventh century. Early in life he devoted himself exclusively to spiritual things, but, finding his noble birth and high repute for sanctity in his native land an obstacle to his perfection, he passed over to Gaul, where he established himself first in a wilderness near the mouth of the Rhone and later by the River Gard. But here again the fame of his sanctity drew multitudes to him, so he withdrew to a dense forest near Nîmes, where in the greatest solitude he spent many years, his sole companion being a hind. This last retreat was finally discovered by the king's hunters, who had pursued the hind to its place of refuge. The king [who according to the legend was Wamba (or Flavius?), King of the Visigoths, but who must have been a Frank, since the Franks had expelled the Visigoths from the neighbourhood of Nîmes almost a century and a half earlier] conceived a high esteem for solitary, and would have heaped every honour upon him; but the humility of the saint was proof against all temptations. He consented, however, to receive thenceforth some disciples, and built a monastery in his valley, which he placed under the rule of St. Benedict. Here he died in the early part of the eighth century, with the highest repute for sanctity and miracles.
His cult spread rapidly far and wide throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, as is witnessed by the numberless churches and monasteries dedicated to him in France, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and the British Isles; by the numerous manuscripts in prose and verse commemorating his virtues and miracles; and especially by the vast concourse of pilgrims who from all Europe flocked to his shrine. In 1562 the relics of the saint were secretly transferred to Toulouse to save them from the hideous excesses of the Huguenots who were then ravaging France, and the pilgrimage in consequence declined. With the restoration of a great part of the relics to the church of St. Giles in 1862, and the discovery of his former tomb there in 1865, the pilgrimages have recommenced. Besides the city of St-Gilles, which sprang up around the abbey, nineteen other cities bear his name, St-Gilles, Toulouse, and a multitude of French cities, Antwerp, Bridges, and Tournai in Belgium, Cologne and Bamberg, in Germany, Prague and Gran in Austria-Hungary, Rome and Bologna in Italy, possess celebrated relics of St. Giles. In medieval art he is a frequent subject, being always depicted with his symbol, the hind. His feast is kept on 1 September. On this day there are also commemorated another St. Giles, an Italian hermit of the tenth century (Acta SS., XLI, 305), and a Blessed Giles, d. about 1203, a Cistercian abbot of Castaneda in the Diocese of Astorga, Spain (op. cit. XLI, 308).
