ASIA: CHINA: 4 PRIESTS ARRESTED- APPEAL TO HOLY SEE

ASIA NEWS REPORT- by Jian Mei
The clergymen were holding a spiritual retreat for priests. At present, they are held in isolation in Dongming without water and food. Public security and the Religious Affairs Bureau want to force them to join the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, which is trying to create a breakaway Church, independent of the pope. Underground Catholics urge action by the Holy See and the universal Church to free them.

Heze (AsiaNews) – Police took into custody four priests from the Diocese of Heze (Caozhou, Shandong) and are holding them in isolation and without food in a prison in Dongming County. Catholics in China have called on the Holy See and the universal Church to intervene to free them.

The clergymen were seized and arrested in late night on Wednesday (Aug. 3) at a house in Luquan (Dongming County), where they were holding a spiritual retreat for fellow priests. Security police climbed over the walls of the house and entered the premises claiming that they were looking for “thieves”. Instead, they caught the four priests asleep and forced them to go with them. Now Fr Wang Chengli, 48 and diocesan administrator, Fr Zhao Wuji, 50s, Fr Li Xianyang, 34, and Fr Sun Guichun, 38, are in prison.

Police has refused people the right to visit them and has denied the four priests food and water for one day and two nights after being held, in order to force them to sign up with the government-sanctioned Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, a body the Chinese Communist government set up to induce Catholics to break away from the pope. Local sources told AsiaNews that the priests refused to sign.

Meanwhile, government officials have been gathering “evidence” to charge the priests, trying even to bribe the faithful or threaten them in order to turn them against the clergymen.

Some of the faithful have tried to talk to the police to get the four priests released, but to no avail. Instead, they found out that the four men were subjected to interrogations by officials from national security, local police and the Religious Affairs Bureau.

Members of local underground Catholic communities said they hope that the Church and Holy See will help them save the priests’ lives. They urge the universal Church to show its support and pray for the release of the prisoners so that everyone can adhere to the principles of truth and continue to bear witness to our faith.

AMERICA: PANAMA: CHURCH TRIES TO STOP DEATH PENALTY

Fides Service REPORT - Congressman Marcos Gonzalez, of the Democratic Change (DC) party, has introduced a bill to introduce death penalty in Panama, in cases of murder and femicide, crime against the collective security and sexual abuse relapse.
The draft law is in conflict with Article 30 of the Panamanian Constitution, which prohibits death penalty. It isalso contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international conventions to which Panama adhered, involving the abolition of capital punishment.
Among Catholics, the news has caused great discomfort. Maribel Jaén, a member of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Church says that the approval of death penalty is "inhumane" and goes against Christian doctrine: "We, as Church, believe in the profound sense of life, therefore, no State has the right to take life away".
Maribel also recalled that many countries have already abolished death penalty after realizing that this penalty does not reduce crime.
This controversy reminds us about the one born during the debate on the reform of the penal code, when the Church expressed herselfin defense of the right to life (see Fides 02/03/2007)
The Ombudsman, Patria Portogallo, rejected the bill, saying that this does not help to reduce crime in the country.
His position is supported also by the previous ombudsman Ricardo Vargas, who points out: "This is a step back towards democratic progress, it is not the right way to fight crime", and believes it is necessary to immediately reject what he defines as being an "unwise and inappropriate proposal".

AUSTRALIA: BISHOP BRADY INTERRED IN CATHEDRAL

ARCHDIOCESE OF PERTH REPORT: Article by Bridget Spinks. Photos by Graham Hall

Bishop John Brady, the founding Bishop of Perth, was finally laid to rest in the diocese he created in St Mary's Cathedral crypt on 2 August with a Mass and Reinterment Ceremony.
PHOTO: Bishop Brady's relatives Lorna and Patrick Lavelle; Odhran O'Brien and Dr Michael Shanahan - who attended the exhumation of Bishop Brady's remains from the grave in Amelie-les-Bains earlier this year - carried in the ossuary containing Bishop Brady's remains.
Archbishop Barry Hickey concelebrated the Mass with senior clergy of the Archdiocese including Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton, Mgr Michael Keating and Mgr Brian O'Loughlin and more than 40 priests of the Perth Archdiocese.
The Sisters of Mercy and the Benedictine monks also attended the event.
Their presence in Perth is thanks to Bishop Brady's missionary zeal: the Sisters of Mercy and some Spanish Benedictines who were living in Italy in the mid-1840s were among the band of 27 missionaries Bishop Brady brought to Perth in 1846.
More than 60 students from Mercedes College - a school founded on the work the first Sisters of Mercy carried out when Bishop Brady was establishing the Diocese - formed a candlelit guard of honor as Bishop Brady's remains were carried in.
Then there was an anachronistic moment ahead of the Mass and Reinterment Ceremony when a certain "Bishop Brady" being played by Mr Noel O'Neill and dressed in a Bishop's mitre and vestments came onto the altar.
Archbishop Hickey symbolically welcomed “Bishop Brady” home and the prelates shared a dialogue on what it was like in the early days of the Perth diocese, providing the congregation with a way to appreciate the significance of the historic moment.
The remains of Bishop Brady are now in St Mary's Cathedral Crypt along with all the former prelates of Perth excluding Archbishop Patrick Clune CsSR - the fourth Bishop of Perth (1911-13) and first Archbishop of Perth (1913-35) - who is buried in Karrakatta.
Several dignitaries also attended the historic occasion including Anglican Archbishop Roger Herft; Lord Mayor of Perth Lisa Scaffidi; Minister for Heritage John Castrilli MLA and the Irish Embassy's Consul General in Western Australia, Michael Nolan.
Several members of the Farrelly family also attended who have a strong connection to the foundations of the Perth Archdiocese. Their relative Terrence Farrelly was one of the lay catechists among the 27 missionaries who accompanied Bishop Brady to Perth in 1846 and is thought be a nephew of Bishop Brady.

TODAY'S FEAST: AUG. 6: TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

    The Transfiguration of the Lord

    Feast: August 6

    Information:

    Feast Day:August 6

The Transfiguration of Christ is the culminating point of His public life, as His Baptism is its starting point, and His Ascension its end. Moreover, this glorious event has been related in detail by St. Matthew (xvii, 1-6), St. Mark (ix, 1-8), and St. Luke (ix, 28-36), while St. Peter (II Pet., i, 16-18) and St. John (i, 14), two of the privileged witnesses, make allusion to it.

About a week after His sojourn in Caesarea Philippi, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them to a high mountain apart, where He was transfigured before their ravished eyes. St. Matthew and St. Mark express this phenomenon by the word metemorphothe, which the Vulgate renders transfiguratus est. The Synoptics explain the true meaning of the word by adding "his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow," according to the Vulgate, or "as light," according to the Greek text.

This dazzling brightness which emanated from His whole Body was produced by an interior shining of His Divinity. False Judaism had rejected the Messias, and now true Judaism, represented by Moses and Elias, the Law and the Prophets, recognized and adored Him, while for the second time God the Father proclaimed Him His only-begotten and well-loved Son. By this glorious manifestation the Divine Master, who had just foretold His Passion to the Apostles (Matt., xvi, 21), and who spoke with Moses and Elias of the trials which awaited Him at Jerusalem, strengthened the faith of his three friends and prepared them for the terrible struggle

of which they were to be witnesses in Gethsemani, by giving them a foretaste of the glory and heavenly delights to which we attain by suffering.

    LOCATION OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

Already in Apostolic times the mount of the Transfiguration had become the "holy mount" (II Pet., i, 18). It seems to have been known by the faithful of the country, and tradition identified it with Mount Thabor. Origen said (A.D. 231-54) "Thabor is the mountain of Galilee on which Christ was transfigured" (Comm. in Ps. lxxxviii, 13). In the next century St. Cyril of Jerusalem (Catech., II, 16) and St. Jerome (Ep. xlvi, ad Marcel.; EP. viii, ad Paulin.; Ep. cviii, ad Eust.) likewise declare it categorically. Later St. Proculus, Patriarch of Constantinople (d. 447; Orat. viii, in Transfig.), Agathangelus (Hist. of Armenia, II, xvii), and Arnobius the Younger (d. 460; Comm. in Ps. lxxxviii, 13) say the same thing. The testimonies increase from century to century without a single dissentient note, and in 553 the Fifth Council of Constantinople erected a see at Mount Thabor (Notitif Antioch. . . . patriarch.).

Some modern writers claim that the Transfiguration could not have taken place on Mount Thabor, which, according to Josephus, was then surmounted by a city. This is incorrect; the Jewish historian speaks neither of a city nor a village; he simply fortified, as he repeats three times, "the mount called Itabyrion" ("Bell. Jud.", II, xx, 6; IV, i, 8; Vita , 37). The town of Atabyrion of Polybius, the Thabor or Celeseth Thabor, the "flank of Thabor" of the Bible, is situated at the foot of Mount Thabor. In any case the presence of houses on a wooded height would not have made it impossible to find a place apart.

It is again objected that Our Lord was transfigured on Mount Hermon, since He was at that time in its vicinity. But the Synoptics are all explicit concerning the lapse of time, six days, or about eight days including those of departure and arrival, between the discourse in Caesarea and the Transfiguration, which would infer a somewhat lengthy journey. Moreover the summits of Hermon are covered with snow as late as June, and even the lesser peaks of 4000 or 5000 feet are likewise snow-covered in February and March, the period of the Transfiguration. Finally, the ancients judged of the height of mountains by their appearance, and Thabor especially was considered a "high mountain", if not by David and Jeremias, at least by Origen and St. Jerome and the pilgrims who made the ascent.

    TODAY'S GOSPEL: AUG. 6: Matthew 17: 1- 9

    Matthew 17: 1 - 9
1And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart.2And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light.3And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Eli'jah, talking with him.4And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah."5He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."6When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe.7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear."8And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.9And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead."
