Vatican Radio REPORT “To doubt the divinity of Jesus…is to oppose God's work”, said Pope Benedict XVI Sunday, as he continued his Angelus reflections on the Gospel of John Chapter 6, on Jesus as the Bread of Life.
The inner courtyard of the Apostolic Palace in Castel Gandolfo was packed from early morning. As the bells of the nearby church struck noon, the Holy Father appeared at the tiny balcony to the joy of the pilgrims gathered below.

In comments in Italian he said, like those who doubt Christ’s divinity in today’s Gospel – His being the Living Bread from Heaven that gives eternal life - we too must ask ourselves if we really feel this hunger, “hunger for the word of God, hunger to know the real meaning of life. Only those who are attracted by God the Father, who listen and allow themselves to be instructed by Him can believe in Jesus, encounter Him and nourish themselves of Him and this find true life, the path of life, justice, truth and love”.

Dear brothers and sisters!

The reading of the 6th chapter of the Gospel of John, which accompanies us in the Sunday Liturgies, led us to reflect last Sunday on the miraculous multiplication of bread with which or Lord fed a crowd of five thousand and on Jesus’ invitation to those whom he had satisfied to busy themselves in procuring a food that endures for eternal life. Jesus wants to help them understand the deeper meaning of the miracle that he has worked: in miraculous satisfying their physical hunger, he prepares them to welcome the announcement that He is the bread which came down from heaven (cf. John 6:41), that satisfies in a permanent way. Even the Jewish people during the long journey in the desert, had experienced a bread that came down from heaven, manna, which had kept them alive until their arrival in the promised land. Now, Jesus speaks of himself as the true bread which came down from heaven, able to keep alive, not for a moment or part of the journey, but forever. He is the food that gives eternal life, because he is the only begotten Son of God, who is in the bosom of the Father, who came to give man life to the full, to introduce man into the life of God.

In Jewish thought it was clear that the true bread from heaven, that nourished Israel was the Law, the word of God. The people of Israel clearly recognized that the Torah was the fundamental and lasting gift of Moses and that the fundamental element that distinguished them from other people lay in their knowing God's will and therefore the right path of life. Now Jesus, in revealing himself as the bread of heaven, testifies that He is the Word of God in person, the Word incarnate, through which man can make God's will his food (cf. Jn 4:34), which guides and supports our existence.

Thus doubting the divinity of Jesus, as do the Jews of today's Gospel passage, means opposing God's work. They in fact say: Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother! (John 6.42). They do not go beyond his earthly origins, and therefore refuse to welcome Him as the Word of God made flesh. St. Augustine in his homly on the Gospel of John thus comments, "they were far off from the bread of heaven, and knew not how to hunger after it. They had the jaws of their heart languid... This bread, indeed, requires the hunger of the inner man "(Homilies on the Gospel of John 26.1). And we too must ask ourselves if we really feel this hunger, hunger for the word of God, hunger to know the real meaning of life. Only those who are attracted by God the Father, who listen and allow themselves to be instructed by Him can believe in Jesus, encounter Him and nourish themselves of Him and this find true life, the path of life, justice, truth and love. St. Augustine adds: "... the Lord said He was the bread that came down from heaven, exhorting us to believe on Him. For to believe on Him is to eat the living bread. He that believes eats; he is sated invisibly, because invisibly is he born again. A babe within, a new man within. Where he is made new, there he is satisfied with food "(ibid.).

Invoking the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, we ask her to guide us to the encounter with Jesus so that our friendship with Him be always more intense; we ask her to introduce us into the full communion of love with her Son, the living bread which came down from heaven, so as to be renewed by Him in our innermost selves.

My thoughts go at this time to the people of Asia, especially to the Philippines, the People’s Republic of China, hardest hit by violent rains, as well as those of the North-west Iran, hit by a violent earthquake. These events have caused numerous deaths and injuries, thousands of displaced people and extensive damage. I invite you to join me in prayer for those who have lost their lives and for all the people tried by such a devastating disaster. May our solidarity and our support not be lacking to these our brothers and sisters.


I am pleased to greet the English-speaking pilgrims gathered for this Angelus prayer. The readings from today’s Mass invite us to put our faith in Jesus, the “bread of life” who offers himself to us in the Eucharist and promises us the joy of the resurrection. During these summer holidays, may you and your families respond to the Lord’s invitation by actively participating in the Eucharistic sacrifice and by generous acts of charity. Upon all of you I invoke his blessings of joy and peace!

OFFICIAL RACCOLTA NOVENA PRAYER WITH INDULGENCE:
To all faithful Christians who, in private or public, in church or in their own houses, shall keep any of the following Novenas, in preparation for the principal feasts of most holy Mary, Pope Pius VII., at the prayer of several holy persons, granted, by Rescripts issued through his Eminence the Cardinal-Vicar, Aug. 4 and Nov. 24, 1808, and Jan. 11, 1800 (all of which are kept in the Segretaria of the Vicariate) -
i. An indulgence of 300 days, daily.
ii. A plenary indulgence to all who shall assist at these Novenas every day, and who shall afterwards, either on the Feast-day itself, to which each Novena respectively has reference, or on some one day in its Octave, after Confession and Communion, pray to our Lord and to the Blessed Virgin ac cording to the pious intention of the Sovereign Pontiff.

Cheju diocese has demanded an official apology after about 20 riot police disrupted a Mass yesterday on Jeju island. The police were clearing a path for a cement truck to enter the construction site of a controversial new naval base.
Father Bartholomew Mun Jung-hyun, who was presiding over the Mass at the gates of the site, was knocked to the ground while administering communion. It is claimed that a policeman also trod on the Eucharist.
Father John Ko Buyeong-soo, president of Cheju diocese’s Committee for Justice and Peace, visited the site shortly after the disturbance.
He told ucanews.com that he would demand an explanation and an apology from police.
“To step on or damage the Eucharist is an insult to Catholics,” he said.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency yesterday issued a press statement in which it denied any wrongdoing.
“There was no violent force throwing Fr Mun to the ground or stepping on the Eucharist,” the statement said.
Woo Jeong-sik, chief inspector of Jeju police, later said it remained unclear whether Fr Mun was knocked down and added: “the policeman who allegedly stepped on the Eucharist said he did not do so.”
But Cheong Seon-nyo, head of the Gangjeong mission station, told ucanews.com yesterday that she was with Fr Mun when the incident occurred.
“I clearly saw a policeman step on the Eucharist that had fallen to the ground,” she said.
The construction of the naval base on Jeju island, which will become home to a new fleet of 20 warships and other vessels, has sparked vigorous protests from local residents, environmental activists and religious leaders.
Protesters say the project would cause irreparable damage to the ecosystem of the island, which is a popular tourism destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The eight priests ordained at St Mary's Cathedral
The Archbishop of Sydney said the Feast Day of St John Vianney, patron saint of priests, was a wonderful day for the ordination of eight new priests in the Archdiocese of Sydney.
The Ordination which brings to 23 the number of new priest ordained by the Cardinal since 2009 and is the largest number of priests to be ordained in more than 20 years, was held at St Mary's Cathedral last weekend on Saturday, 4 August.
Four of the new priests were trained at the Seminary of the Good Shepherd and the other four at Chester Hill's Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary of the Neocatechumenal Way. They are Father Michael Lanzon, Father Samuel Lynch, Father Paul Phan Dinh Nguyen and Father Ioane Epeli Qimaquima, who studied at the Seminary of the Good Shepherd, and Father Allan Casquejo, Father Norvin Dias, Pierluigi Passoni and Pasquale Pizzoferro from the Redemptoris Seminary.
"God chooses all sorts of people for His good purposes," the Cardinal said and paid tribute to the multicultural backgrounds of the ordinands describing it as a "true reflection of the multicultural nature of our Archdiocese where half the Catholics are migrants or children of migrants."

Concelebrating with His Eminence at the Ordination Mass were Bishops Julian Porteous, Peter Comensoli and Terry Brady as well as a large gathering of priests from around the Archdiocese.
More than two thousand family and friends were also treated to the magnificent harmonies of the St Mary's Cathedral choir, under the direction of Thomas Wilson.

Cardinal Pell has ordained 23 priests since 2009 in Sydney
A group of followers from the Neocatechumenal Way also welcomed their newly ordained priests in their own particular musical fashion, delighting everyone.
Addressing the packed Cathedral on behalf of the ordinands, Fr Samuel Lynch paid particular tribute to Cardinal Pell saying it was his insight and leadership that had helped reverse the decline in vocations and the renewed interest in a religious and priestly life.
"I think it is very fitting in his 25th year as bishop that God should give him eight new priests," he said.
The eight priests have already been assigned parishes across the Archdiocese and at each of these parishes Masses of Thanksgiving were held the day after the Ordination on Sunday 5 August.
Father Allan Casquejo is now assistant priest at St Dominic's Church, Flemington; Fr Norvin Dias is assistant Priest at St Therese Parish, Denistone; Fr Michael Lanzon is at Our Lady of the Rosary, Fairfield; Fr Samuel Lynch is at St Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church, Cronulla; Fr Paul Phan Dinh Nguyen will do double duty as assistant priest at St Michael's Catholic Church Ryde as well as celebrating Masses in the Vietnam language at Cabramatta; Fr Pierluigi Passoni has been appointed to the Parish of the Sacred Heart, Villawood; Fr Pasquale Pizzoferro is at St Anthony of Padua parish, Clovelly and Fr Ionane Epeli Qimaquima is assistant priest at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Mosman.
"Every new priest is a great blessing and a reason to celebrate," the Cardinal said.

EUROPE : PRO-LIFERS HOLD VIGILS DESPITE LEGAL THREAT - 40 DAYS FOR LIFE

Pro-life prayer vigils outside abortion clinics are expected to increase across London despite the threat of legal action from a global abortion provider.
The pro-life prayer group 40 Days for Life will hold vigils outside abortion clinics in Brixton, Bedford Square and the Marie Stopes clinic in Whitfield Street between September 26 and November 4 of this year.
The prayer vigils have become increasingly controversial since abortion provider Marie Stopes tried to secure a legal injunction against another pro-life group, the Good Counsel Network, for praying outside their clinic holding “baby pink and blue rosary beads”.
During the latest prayer vigil led by 40 Days for Life outside the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) clinic in Bedford Square, London, the organisation Abortion Rights launched a counter-protest following accusations that members of 40 Days for Life had filmed women entering abortion clinics.
Responding to criticisms in a blog post last week, a spokeswoman for 40 Days for Life said that the media had “massively twisted what happens at 40 Days For Life”.
She continued: “They have tried to present it as an American-style ‘protest’ which it isn’t at all. At all vigils there is a sign displayed prominently saying ‘we are here to help’. And the help that is on offer is real, as many women will attest. No one is judging, condemning or bullying but trying to offer a lifeline.
“It is grotesquely wrong and unfair to conflate peaceful pro-life outreach with the murder of abortionists. All pro-lifers are appalled by violence, because we believe that all human life is worthy of our respect and protection. A few lone crazies do not represent any organisation or movement. It would be equally wrong to tar all peaceful Muslims with the 9/11 brush, or all atheists with the murderous purges of Stalin, Pol Pot or the French Revolution.”

AFRICA : ZAMBIA : PRIEST EXPELLED BY AUTHORITIES - CLERGY PROTEST

Agenzia Fides report- The government is taking into serious consideration the withdrawal of Fr. Viateur Banyangandora’s deportation, the priest of Rwandese origin expelled by the authorities of Zambia at the end of July. This is what 130 diocesan priests ask for in a statement released on the occasion of the National Conference of the Association of Zambian Diocesan Catholic Clergy (AZADCC), which ended today, August 9.
In the document, sent to Fides Agency, the diocesan priests agree with what was written by His Exc. Mgr. George Cosmas Zumaire Lungu, Bishop of Chipata, in a message that will be read in all parishes of the diocese on Sunday, August 12 (see Fides 07/08/2012).
"Fr. Viateur was ordained in 2004, in the diocese of Chipata in which he served. Many of us have studied, lived and worked with him. We know he is a good priest and a man of peace and integrity " is what is stated in the declaration.
The priests claim to be "surprised and not satisfied" by the reasons presented by the government to justify Fr. Viateur’s deportation, and reveal that they have received "an official statement from the diocese Ruhengeri in Rwanda, that Fr. Viateur should not respond to any inquiry by the government of that Country. "
Based on the foregoing considerations, it therefore calls for the government to reconsider the priest’s deportation. The priests also ask the authorities to join the Church to promote harmony in the Church-State relations, and launch an appeal so that they face the real problems affecting the poor, such as the price of corn, cotton and other agricultural products. Fr. Viateur was expelled after a sermon in which he tackled the problem of the very low price of cotton, which threatens the ability of farmers to obtain a minimum income for subsistence.
"We implore the Catholic community and the priests of the diocese of Chipata, and all people of good will, to remain calm, peace and to pray during this time of waiting for Fr. Viateur’s return. May the good Lord bless us and guide us through the intercession of Mary our Mother," the statement concludes. (L.M.)
