CATHOLIC NEWS WORLD : FRIDAY JULY 6, 2012

Vatican City, 6 July 2012 (VIS) - On Monday 9 July, the Holy Father will make a visit to the House of the Verbites in Nemi, a village near Castelgandolfo, according to a communique issued today by the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household.
It was at the House of the Verbites - which since January 2010 has been known as the "Ad Gentes Centre" - that the Vatican Council II Commission on Missions met to prepare the draft of the Conciliar Decree on the Mission Activity of the Church. The theologian and professor Joseph Ratzinger participated in the session held there from 29 March to 3 April 1965 as an expert of the conciliar assembly. Hence the reason for his private visit, which he is making at the invitation of the Missionaries of the Divine Word.
Benedict XVI will depart from Castelgandolfo by car at 11.30 a.m., arriving at Nemi a quarter of an hour later. He will be welcomed in the House of the Verbites by Fr. Heinz Kuluke, superior general elect; Fr. Antonio Pernia superior general, and Fr. Giancarlo Girardi, procurator general. The Holy Father will then move on the chapel to meet with the 150 participants in the general chapter of the order and the community of the Mother House in Rome. Having adored the Blessed Sacrament, and listened to a welcome address from Fr. Pernia, the Pope will make some brief remarks and impart his apostolic blessing.
He is due to return to Castelgandolfo at 12.15 p.m.

ASIA : MONGOLIA : CELEBRATION OF ANNIVERSARY

ASIA NEWS REPORT:
by Joseph Yun Li-sun
With a solemn Mass in the Cathedral of Ulaanbaatar, the July 8 begins celebrations for the anniversary. Apostolic Prefect Bishop Padilla, present along with Mgr. Savio Hon of Propaganda Fide, and Msgr. Lazarus You, Bishop of Daejeon. Launch of a clinic for the poor, run by a Korean priest.

Ulaanbaatar (AsiaNews) - A "small but lively" community, "thanking God for the great things he has done for her." With these words, the apostolic prefect of Ulaanbaatar, Msgr. Wenceslao Padilla, described preparation for the celebrations of the first 20 years of the Catholic Church in Mongolia. The festivities will take place on July 10 and 11, and they will see the presence of Mgr. Taifai Savio Hon, Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and Mgr. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, bishop of the Diocese of Daejeon, Korea.

The first Mongolian mission was opened in 1992 just by Msgr. Padilla, Apostolic Nuncio in Korea, who arrived in Ulaanbaatar with two brothers of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Today there are 64 missionaries, who, coming from 18 countries, work with the local community: 9 belong to religious congregations and the Diocese of Daejeon. Meanwhile, the number of Catholics has reached 415.

For the Prefect, "we are grateful for the generous work of many missionaries. But we must also push more and more to stimulate a local church, consisting of Mongolians: is the time to encourage vocations, pastoral animation and baptisms. We can do much more, and we are encouraged to do so. "

Today the Catholic mission in Mongolia has 4 parishes, one more than in 2007. They are the church of Saints Peter and Paul, Mary, the Good Shepherd and Mary Help of Christians: the latter is in Darhan, the second largest city in the country. There are also several Catholic schools - especially for the poor - and the Don Bosco Technical Centre, which offers an alternative to classical studies. Furthermore, on the occasion of 20 years a clinic for the poor will open on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar.

It will be run by a Korean priest, Fr. Peter, sent there by Msgr. You. He tells AsiaNews: "My diocese has sent 4 priests to Mongolia and one of them has worked hard over the last 4 years to get permission to open this small hospital. We are very proud of him, and we are ready to support him economically. When I celebrate Sunday Mass with Msgr. Hon and Msgr. Padilla my thoughts and prayers will be for this mission. "

The ratios are very close: "In addition to the 4 Korean priests, there are 2 Mongolian seminarians studying here in Daejeon. Also, my faithful have taken the task of supporting studies of a local seminarian, the first for Mongolian who wants to become a priest. South Korea has had a lot thanks to the work of foreign missionaries: it's time to reciprocate. "

AUSTRALIA : ORDINATION OF MICHAEL GALLACHER

ARCHDIOCESE OF MELBOURNE REPORT:
Ordination of Michael Gallacher

Wednesday 4 July 2012

By Natina Giacco.
DESPITE THE bitterly cold winter’s evening outside, the spirit inside St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, on Friday, 29 June, 2012,the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, radiated a warm and intensely joyous atmosphere. This environment embraced all who gathered for the ordination to the priesthood of Melbourne Archdiocese’s, Reverend Michael Peter Gallacher.

I first met Fr Michael in Rome in October, 2010, when I attended the liturgical and Eucharistic celebrations surrounding the canonisation of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop in October, 2010. Along with nine other teachers and 65 students who represented Catholic secondary schools within the Archdiocese of Melbourne, we were blessed to meet Fr Michael while he was still a student for the priesthood at the North American College in Rome. As we participated in our pilgrimage through Rome, Michael accompanied us and became a wonderful spiritual mentor, friend, guide and support to us all. The presence of so many of our Rome pilgrims at Fr Michael’s ordination to the priesthood testified to this.

St Patrick’s Cathedral was filled with people of all ages, from all walks of life. Archbishop Denis Hart was the Principal Celebrant and Ordaining Prelate; he was joined by Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv and 60 other priests, who concelebrated the Holy Mass on this grace-filled and inspiring occasion. Archbishop Hart reminded us all of the significance of Fr Michael’s ordination occurring on the solemn feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, and that Fr Michael was ordained into the Catholic Church which was founded by Jesus Christ. It was moving to hear Archbishop Hart thank Fr Michael’s parents, Margot and Peter Gallacher, for raising and nurturing their son within a Catholic home so that he accepted God’s great gift to him of the priesthood. Fr Michael’s siblings, Jane and David were the readers during the Mass.
Archbishop Hart articulated some of the distinct attributes of the priesthood, whereby he is required to be a shepherd, a teacher and a priest. He is required to be a model and an inspiration for all people as he celebrates the Eucharist; all the sacraments, as well as, journeying with people in bringing them to Almighty God. The great gift of Jesus Christ in giving us his priesthood was so beautifully evident in witnessing the humility and affection with which Archbishop Hart and then each of the concelebrating priests laid their hands upon Fr Michael. It was so special to see Carmelite priest, Fr Noel Kierce, assist Fr Michael, a former student of Whitefriar’s College, Donvale, with his investiture with his stole and chasuble.

The joy and beauty of the entire Mass was manifested in the faces of Fr Michael’s parents, family, friends and the entire congregation. How fitting that the servers and the choir for this Holy Mass should comprise the seminarians from Corpus Christi College, Carlton. At the conclusion of the Mass, Fr Michael displayed great humility, graciousness and eloquence in thanking all those people and communities who had shaped the man and now the priest who stood before us all. Fr Michael reminded all of us that we need more priests and he implored the young men in the congregation to ask themselves if Almighty God was calling them to a vocation to the priesthood. The happiness and delight of the evening culminated with Fr Michael imparting his blessings to his family and to the huge numbers of his friends who went to greet him with their friendship, love and prayers.

Vocations News recently spoke to Fr Gallacher about his vocation and his time studying in Rome.

AFRICA : SOMALIA : HUNGER EMERGENCY - THOUSANDS AT RISK

CISA NEWS REPORT;
Facing 'Fresh Hunger Emergency'
MOGADISHU, July 6, 2012 (CISA) -Poor rains and continuing conflict in Somalia are threatening the recovery from last year’s famine, putting hundreds of thousands of children at risk of hunger. This is according to the charity Save the Children.
The charity called for an urgent increase in aid as a huge number of families in Somalia are still unable to cope with the effects of drought.
Last year, East Africa was hit by the region’s worst drought in 60 years and many thousands of people died.
It also triggered a major refugee crisis with hundreds of thousands of Somalis fleeing rural areas, much of which are controlled by Islamist militants who have banned international aid agencies.
Many people walked over the border to camps in Kenya and Ethiopia or to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, which is secured by African Union forces helping a UN-backed government.
A website affiliated to the al-Qaeda group al-Shabab printed photographs of the militants burning sacks of food in the central Hiran region that it allegedly confiscated from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
It said that the food had gone bad and needed to be destroyed, the website reported.
At one stage six districts of Somalia were declared famine zones last year.
Save the Children called for both an urgent increase in emergency help and a new push to tackle the underlying causes of Somalia’s vulnerability to hunger.
“We’re going to have a very late harvest,” stated Save the Children’s Anne Mitaru in an interview with BBC’s Network Africa programme, saying this year’s rains had come late and been poor.
The situation has been compounded by the fact that so many people have been displaced and the conflict which keeps food prices high, meaning families are unable to recover, she said.
The food crisis is most acute in southern regions of the country, where the al-Shabab militants are strongest.
The latest assessment from the World Bank says that outright famine is not anticipated but the situation remains serious.
Somalia has had no effective central government since 1991, and has been wracked by fighting ever since – a situation that has allowed piracy and lawlessness to flourish.

AMERICA : BOLIVIA : VIOLENCE CONTRARY TO HUMAN DIGNITY

Agenzia Fides REPORT - "On many occasions the Catholic Church has condemned the use of violence, perceived as unnecessary and contrary to the dignity of every person and to their exercise of fundamental rights ... A
responsible dialogue instead presumes openness, listening and mutual respect, in order to achieve the desired solutions, at the service of human dignity and the common good of society ": are the words of a statement read by His Exc. Mgr. Oscar Aparicio, Auxiliary Bishop of La Paz, Secretary of the Episcopal Conference, during a press conference held yesterday to re-launch the appeal for dialogue. The Secretary General of the Bolivian Episcopal Conference expressed great concern over the repressive action exercised by the police against the participants of the IX Marcia of Tipnis (National Park and Indigenous Territory Isiboro Secure), including women and children, organized two days ago in defense of this indigenous area, to avoid the construction of a highway that would cross it.
Several institutions have expressed support to the local population: the COB (Central Workers of Bolivia), the Federation of Teachers of schools in La Paz, many sectors of society, the Catholic Church in the person of the Bishop of the Diocese of El Alto, Mgr. Jesus Juarez, who is the Vice President of Pastoral Social Caritas Bolivian, who has appealed for open dialogue and to find authentic agreements.
Yesterday the meeting of the Permanent Council of the Bolivian Episcopal Conference started in Cochabamba, during which this situation and other social problems in Bolivia were discussed. The situation became tense after the approval of the "consultation" on the construction of the highway in the area of Tipnis (see Fides 25/10/2011), although the government has specified that it is just a consultation and not the final approval for the construction of the work. Matthew 9: 9 - 13
9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.
10 And as he sat at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.
11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
12 But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
13 Go and learn what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."
