VATICAN
POPE: ANGELUS: THE LOGIC OF CHRIST IS THE LOGIC OF CHARITY-

VATICAN CITY, 11 JUL 2010 (VIS REPORT) - At midday today the Holy Father appeared at the balcony overlooking the inner courtyard of the Apostolic Palace of Castelgandolfo to pray the Angelus with pilgrims gathered there. He is currently spending a period of rest at Castelgandolfo, his summer residence.
Commenting on today's Gospel reading, the parable of the Good Samaritan, the Holy Father affirmed that "it is up to us to be close to whoever needs help. The Samaritan", he said, "takes responsibility for the needs of a stranger whom robbers had left half dead at the roadside, while a priest and a Levite pass by on the other side, afraid perhaps that - as the precept said - they would be contaminated by contact with blood.
"This parable must, then", the Pope added, "lead us to transform our logic in accordance with the logic of Christ, which is the logic of charity: God is love and to worship Him means to serve our brothers and sisters with sincere and generous love".
Benedict XVI went on: "This Gospel episode presents us a criterion to use as a measure; that of 'universal love towards the needy whom we encounter by chance, whoever they may be'. Along with this universal rule, there is also a specifically ecclesial requirement; that 'within the ecclesial family no member should suffer through being in need'. The rule Christians follow, as learned from the teaching of Jesus, is that of the 'heart which sees' where there is need of love and acts accordingly".
Finally, the Holy Father noted that today the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Benedict of Norcia , patron of his own pontificate and "father and legislator of Western monasticism" whom Paul VI proclaimed as patron of Europe in 1964, "recognising his great efforts towards the formation of European civilisation.
"Let us entrust our journey of faith, and this holiday period in particular, to the Virgin, that our hearts may never lose sight of the Word of God and of our brothers and sisters in difficulty", he concluded.

ASIA
INDIA: KASHMIR TRIES TO EXPEL DUTCH MISSIONARY PRIEST AFTER 47 YEARS

UCAN report: Church people in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed dismay at an Indian government expulsion order against a Dutch missioner who has served in the state for 47 years.

The order against Mill Hill Missioner Father Jim Borst was “unexpected,” said Bishop Peter Celestine Elampassery of Jammu-Srinagar diocese.
He said the Church will conduct “all efforts” to get the order canceled.
The Foreigners Registration Office had told the priest to leave India by the end of July. The priest has been working in India’s only Muslim-majority state since 1963.
Catholics in the state want the missioner to “stay in Kashmir and be buried here,” the Capuchin prelate said.
He said Church officials have already approached the government to explain that the missioner is “here to work for the poor.”
Father Borst “is unfazed by the order and is hopeful he can continue” his work, Bishop Elampassery told ucanews.com.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India branded the government move “myopic.”
Spokesperson Father Babu Joseph said the circumstances leading to the order “need to be investigated.”
“It is a myopic policy of the government to unceremoniously order missioners like Father Borst to leave,” Father Joseph said adding that the missioner “has been doing tremendous work.”
Mill Hill Missioners pioneered education and healthcare in the state in the early 19th century.
Father Borst is principal of the Good Shepherd School in Kashmir Valley. Some Muslim groups have accused him of using the school as a cover for converting people.
Bishop Elampassery said the conversion charge is “baseless.”
Father Borst has been “very careful” about his actions “after he was threatened with a similar order in 2004,” the Capuchin prelate said.

AMERICA
USA: HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CHAPLAIN FIRED FOR JESUS PRAYER

Fox News report: A North Carolina pastor was relieved of his duties as an honorary chaplain of the state house of representatives after he closed a prayer by invoking the name of Jesus.

“I got fired,” said Ron Baity, pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He had been invited to lead prayer for an entire week but his tenure was cut short when he refused to remove the name Jesus from his invocation.
Baity’s troubles began during the week of May 31. He said a House clerk asked to see his prayer. The invocation including prayers for our military, state lawmakers and a petition to God asking him to bless North Carolina.”
“When I handed it to the lady, I watched her eyes and they immediately went right to the bottom of the page and the word Jesus,” he told FOX News Radio. “She said ‘We would prefer that you not use the name Jesus. We have some people here that can be offended.’”
When Baity protested, she brought the matter to the attention of House Speaker Joe Hackney.

EUROPE
SPAIN: TODAY OPENS THE 63RD MISSIONARY WEEK IN BURGOS

Agenzia Fides report – Today marks the opening day at the 63rd Missiology Week in Burgos. The event is being held at the Archdiocese's Faculty of Theology. After words of greeting from the Archbishop of Burgos, Archbishop Francisco Gil Hellin, the first conference will be held, given by Bishop Camilo Lorenzo Iglesias of Astorga, a member of the Bishops' Commission for the Missions, who will discuss the theme of "Priests for the Mission." Mass will follow.

According to a note sent to Fides, the opening conference presents on of the two main themes of the Week, which aims at showing the universal and missionary dimension of the priesthood, although this must be done within the Christian community because, as the theme of the Week expresses, "we have to carry out the mission together." It cannot be a task of some specialists who work on their own in isolation, but must be the work and commitment of all Christians.

The other main theme of the week is the ecumenical dimension: the mission must be done all together, i.e. in communion with all Christians of various denominations, to avoid repeating history in terms of the divisions in Christianity throughout history. This is the same idea launched by modern ecumenism, whose origins date back to the International Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910. This is why the Week in Burgos will also celebrate the centenary of this landmark in the history of Christianity in the twentieth century. (CE)

TODAY´S SAINT

St. John Gualbert

BENEDICTINE ABBOT
Information: Feast Day: July 12
Born: 985 at Florence, Italy

Died: July 11, 1073 at Passignano near Florence, Italy
Canonized: 1193 by Pope Celestine III
Patron of: forest workers; foresters; park rangers; parks
ST. JOHN GUALBERT was born at Florence, A. D. 999. Following the profession of arms at that troubled period, he became involved in a blood-feud with a near relative. One Good Friday, as he was riding into Florence accompanied by armed men, he encountered his enemy in a place where neither could avoid the other. John would have slain him; but his adversary, who was totally unprepared to fight, fell upon his knees with his arms stretched out in the form of a cross, and implored him, for the sake of Our Lord's holy Passion, to spare his life. St. John said to his enemy, "I cannot refuse what you ask in Christ's name. I grant you your life, and I give you my friendship. Pray that God may forgive me my sin." Grace triumphed. A humble and changed man, he entered the Church of St. Miniato, which was near; and whilst he prayed, the figure of our crucified Lord, before which he was kneeling, bowed its head toward him as if to ratify his pardon. Abandoning the world, he gave himself up to prayer and penance in the Benedictine Order. Later he was led to found the congregation called of Vallombrosa, from the shady valley a few miles from Florence, where he established his first monastery. Once the enemies of the Saint came to his convent of St. Salvi, plundered it, and set fire to it, and having treated the monks with ignominy, beat them and wounded them. St. John rejoiced. "Now," he said, "you are true monks. Would that I myself had had the honor of being with you when the soldiers came, that I might have had a share in the glory of your crowns! " He fought manfully against simony, and in many ways promoted the interest of the Faith in Italy. After a life of great austerity, he died whilst the angels were singing round his bed, July 11, 1073.

TODAY´S GOSPEL

Matthew 10: 34 - 42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

36 and a man's foes will be those of his own household.

37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

38 and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.

40 "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.

41 He who receives a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward, and he who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

42 And whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward."

1 And when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
