MALALA - GIRL SHOT BY TALIBAN - TO ADDRESS UN AND IS IN TIME MAGAZINE'S MOST INFLUENTIAL GROUP
UCAN/ UN RELEASE
Nine months after being singled out and shot, 15-year-old addresses the UN

- July 12, 2013
- Malala Yousafzai took over the United Nations on Friday, nine months after a Taliban gunman put a bullet in her head believing he was ending the Pakistani teenager's campaign for girls' education.
[Malala has been invited to mark her 16th birthday with her first public speech since making a near miraculous recovery from the attack on a school bus near her home in Pakistan's Swat Valley.]
Doctors had to place a titanium plate over the hole in her skull and her hearing has been badly affected. But Malala has become a global superstar and a favorite to become the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize winner.
She has already been named as one of Time magazine's most influential people in 2013 and has reportedly secured a $3 million contract for a book on her life story.
"This frail young girl who was seriously injured has become such a powerful symbol not just for the girls' right to education, but for the demand that we do something about it immediately," said former British prime minister Gordon Brown, UN envoy on education who organized World Malala Day.
"There will be no compromise with any religious extremist who says girls should not go to school or stop going to school at 10," Brown told CBS News.
Malala is expected to use her speech at a UN youth assembly to lecture UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and any listening world leaders on the need to keep a promise to provide universal primary education by the end of 2015.
She will also hand over a petition to Ban signed by more than 330,000 people calling on the 193 UN member states to finance teachers, schools and books to meet the education goal.
"From the day that terrible shooting -- assassination attempt -- took place, Malala Yousafzai is a symbol for the rights of girls, and indeed the rights of all young people, to an education," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.
"And she has further underscored that symbolism through her remarkable recovery and her eloquence in explaining her case and her position," Ban's spokesman added.
The Taliban made it clear that the aim of the shooting was to let the world know that girls have no right to equality at school.
Now, more girls than ever before are attending schools in the Swat Valley.
But the United Nations estimates that 57 million children of primary school age do not get an education -- half of them in countries at conflict like Syria.
"Students and teachers across our globe are intimidated and harassed, injured, raped, and even killed. Schools are burned, bombed, and destroyed," said Diya Nijhowne, director of the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack.
Nijhowne highlighted a horrific attack in northern Nigeria last week.
Gunmen from the Boko Haram Islamist group -- whose name literally means "Western education is a sin" -- broke into a secondary boarding school and killed 41 students and one teacher before setting fire to the building.
According to Ban's annual report on children and conflict, 115 schools were attacked last year in Mali, 321 in the occupied Palestinian territory, 167 in Afghanistan and 165 in Yemen.
Schools were also a regular target in Pakistan when Malala started a diary at the age of 11, written under the pseudonym of Gul Makai, the name of a Pashtun heroine, that was published on BBC Urdu.
The young girl built up a worldwide following of supporters as she told of the anxiety she and friends felt as they saw students dropping out for fear of being targeted by militants. Girls also refused to wear uniforms to school in case militants saw them.
Malala and her family briefly left Swat during a government offensive on the Taliban controlled territory.
On their return, they were the subject of threats by militants before the attack on October 9 last year.
The family now live in Birmingham, England where the girl has undergone surgery and rehabilitation. The Taliban said it shot Malala because of her efforts to promote "secular education" and have made it clear she remains a target. AFP

RIP FR. ANDRE HRDINA OFM Cap. AGE 94 - COURAGEOUS WITNESS IN AUSTRALIA
ARCHDIOCESE OF MELBOURNE RELEASE
Vale Fr Andrew Hrdina OFM Cap
Thursday 11 July 2013
FR ANDREW Hrdina OFM Cap died Tuesday morning in Melbourne aged 94 years. There will be a Vigil for Fr Andrew at St Anthony's Shrine, 182 Power Street, Hawthorn at 7pm on Thursday 11 July, and the Funeral Mass will be held at St Anthony's Shrine on Friday 12 July at 2pm.
Fr Andrew celebrated 75 years of Religious Profession and 70 years of Priestly Ordination in 2011. He was born in 1919 in Antlerka, Czechoslovakia. After completing his secondary education he entered the Capuchin Novitiate in Prague and made his first profession of vows in 1935.
He was sent to the Capuchin province of Paris for three years to study philosophy and then returned to Czechoslovakia for theology. Fr Andrew was ordained a priest for the Capuchin Order at Olmouc on 30 November, 1941 (the Feast of St Andrew). This was during the dark days of World War II, which were to change Europe and ultimately affect the destiny of Fr Andrew’s priestly ministry.
After his ordination Fr Andrew was sent to the Porciuncu Friary in Prague, where he remained until the end of the war, when he was sent to the Friary of St Joseph in the same city. In the social and political turmoil after the war, Czechoslovakia fell under communist domination and was cut off from the free world by the infamous Iron Curtain. The oppression and persecution suffered under communism is so well known and chronicled that it needs little to imagine the difficulties encountered in the early years of Fr Andrew’s priestly and religious life. His last posting in his native land was to the Friary at Susice.
The story continues in Fr Andrew’s own words:
“I remained here only for a few months. I remember, after Easter, I was visited by some friends from Prague who told me that all the monasteries were closed and all the religious men and women were put into concentration camps and no doubt the same would happen here.
“I spoke to the three friars with me and we decided to divide all the money, to place the valuables in the hands of people we could trust and to leave, everyone going his own way.
“That happened at the end of April and, when the communists arrived on 2 May, they found an empty friary.
“Then I spent a few months in Prague, living in one house after another. I realised that my only sensible course would be to leave the country, which at the time was a very dangerous adventure.
“I was put in touch with someone I could trust and given a false passport. I was told that I would be travelling as a missionary returning from Africa to France and that at the border I must be confident, relaxed, showing no signs of nervousness or fear, and speaking only in French. Before the journey I never prayed so hard in my life to Mary and Jesus and as a result I was confident that everything would be OK.
“I boarded the train in Prague. At the border I was interviewed by many officers. When finally the train moved I thanked God in my heart. I arrived in France and remained with the friars a few months. Although they asked me to remain I expressed a desire to go to Australia, even though I did not speak the language or know anybody there. Why I had that desire I do not know.”
Fr Andrew did in fact reach Australia and since arriving he has been a valued and loved member of the Australian Capuchin Province. He has generously served in many places and in many ministries throughout Australia. His strong love for the Order, our Province and for us, his Capuchin brothers, is expressed in so many ways.
We thank God that he safely guided Fr Andrew to Australia and we thank him for his joyful, courageous and generous witness of Capuchin life. As our most senior friar he holds a special place in our hearts and in our Province.
May God bless you, Fr Andrew, and grant you all the graces you need.

Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 387
Reading 1 GN 46:1-7, 28-30
Israel set out with all that was his.
When he arrived at Beer-sheba,
he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
There God, speaking to Israel in a vision by night, called,
“Jacob! Jacob!”
He answered, “Here I am.”
Then he said: “I am God, the God of your father.
Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt,
for there I will make you a great nation.
Not only will I go down to Egypt with you;
I will also bring you back here, after Joseph has closed your eyes.”
So Jacob departed from Beer-sheba,
and the sons of Israel
put their father and their wives and children
on the wagons that Pharaoh had sent for his transport.
They took with them their livestock
and the possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan.
Thus Jacob and all his descendants migrated to Egypt.
His sons and his grandsons, his daughters and his granddaughtersB
all his descendants—he took with him to Egypt.
Israel had sent Judah ahead to Joseph,
so that he might meet him in Goshen.
On his arrival in the region of Goshen,
Joseph hitched the horses to his chariot
and rode to meet his father Israel in Goshen.
As soon as Joseph saw him, he flung himself on his neck
and wept a long time in his arms.
And Israel said to Joseph, “At last I can die,
now that I have seen for myself that Joseph is still alive.”

Gospel MT 10:16-23
Jesus said to his Apostles:
“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
But beware of men,
for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
before the Son of Man comes.”

TODAY'S SAINT: JULY 12: ST. JOHN GUALBERT
St. John Gualbert
BENEDICTINE ABBOT
Feast: July 12
ST. JOHN GUALBERT was born at Florence, A. D. 999. Following the profession of arms at that troubled period, he became involved in a blood-feud with a near relative. One Good Friday, as he was riding into Florence accompanied by armed men, he encountered his enemy in a place where neither could avoid the other. John would have slain him; but his adversary, who was totally unprepared to fight, fell upon his knees with his arms stretched out in the form of a cross, and implored him, for the sake of Our Lord's holy Passion, to spare his life. St. John said to his enemy, "I cannot refuse what you ask in Christ's name. I grant you your life, and I give you my friendship. Pray that God may forgive me my sin." Grace triumphed. A humble and changed man, he entered the Church of St. Miniato, which was near; and whilst he prayed, the figure of our crucified Lord, before which he was kneeling, bowed its head toward him as if to ratify his pardon. Abandoning the world, he gave himself up to prayer and penance in the Benedictine Order. Later he was led to found the congregation called of Vallombrosa, from the shady valley a few miles from Florence, where he established his first monastery. Once the enemies of the Saint came to his convent of St. Salvi, plundered it, and set fire to it, and having treated the monks with ignominy, beat them and wounded them. St. John rejoiced. "Now," he said, "you are true monks. Would that I myself had had the honor of being with you when the soldiers came, that I might have had a share in the glory of your crowns! " He fought manfully against simony, and in many ways promoted the interest of the Faith in Italy. After a life of great austerity, he died whilst the angels were singing round his bed, July 11, 1073.
