VATICAN : AWAITING PAPAL VISIT TO LEBANON IN IRAQ
Vatican Radio REPORT The count down is on, with just weeks to go before Benedict XVI's apostolic journey to Lebanon, scheduled for September 14 to 16th. A visit which has as its primary purpose the publication and delivery of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation for the Middle East, the concluding document for the 2010 Middle East Synod of Bishops. (IMAGE SOURCE: GOOGLE)
The Pope's visit is therefore eagerly awaited not only in Lebanon but in all the Christian communities of the region. Alexander Gisotti asked Msgr. Shlemon Warduni, Auxiliary Bishop of Baghdad how the Church in Iraq is looking forward to the papal trip.
Bishop Warduni says “despite all the difficulties that exist and all the worrying circumstances that there are in the Middle East, including Iraq, the Church awaits with great hope the Holy Father's visit to Lebanon.”
It is “the visit of a father who loves his children, who feel his concern for them, anywhere and under any circumstances,” continues Warduni. “Even in Iraq, we expect this Apostolic Exhortation with love and great hope. There are still many difficulties, especially regarding security. We hope, therefore, that this visit will bring much consolation, courage and so much support.”
Q - The Pope will meet not only the Christians and the bishops in Lebanon – he will also have a meeting with Muslim communities. This is very important to strengthen dialogue ...
“Of course! Dialogue between Muslims and Christians was spoken of even at the Synod for the Middle East. All of us live in one place: here we grow up together, live together, and especially we (as) witnesses of the Gospel - we always try to be close to our brothers, trying to make people understand that religion must bring people together, to help understand that the Spirit of God is present everywhere. If we do not respect each other, if we fail to help each other and reconcile each to the other, it will be very difficult to move forward in these circumstances - with the war - because the love for God and love of neighbor are not understood.”
Q - The Pope's trip to Lebanon will also be an encouragement to the many Iraqi Christians forced to flee. This proximity of the Pope is felt by the Christian community in Iraq?
“As the Pope asks of us, we must love our land, we must grip on to our faith, our church and to our land. This is the hour of great and powerful hope, so that everyone may return to their homes: there, they will truly find happiness. We hope that everyone can live in peace and safety!”

HYMN.
O gloriosa Virginum,
Sublimis inter sidera,
Qui te creavit, parvulum
Lactente nutris ubere.
Quod Heva tristis abstulit,
Tu reddis almo germine:
Intrent ut astra flebiles,
Coeli recludis cardines.
Tu regis alti janua,
Et aula lucis fulgida:
Vitam datam per Virginem,
Gentes redemptae plaudite.
Jesu, tibi sit gloria,
Qui natus es de Virgine,
Cum Patre, et almo Spiritu
In sempiterna saecula. Amen.
TRANSLATION.
O Queen of all the Virgin choir,
Enthroned above the starry sky;
Who with pure milk from thy own breast
Thy own Creator didst supply.
What man hath lost in hapless Eve,
Thy sacred womb to man restores;
Thou to the sorrowing here beneath
Hast open’d Heaven’s eternal doors.
Hail, O refulgent Hall of light!
Hail, Gate sublime of Heaven’s high King!
Through thee redeem’d to endless life,
Thy praise let all the nations sing.
O Jesu! born of Virgin bright,
Immortal glory be to Thee;
Praise to the Father infinite,
And Holy Ghost eternally.
GLORY OF MARY AFTER DEATH.
In the resurrection of her body.
Let us meditate how glorious Mary was after death, since by the power of the Highest her body, raised again to life, forthwith acquired the four gifts of brightness, subtlety, agility, and impassibility; and, filled with consolation at the excellency of her glory, let us thus invoke her:
i. O Lady exalted, who wast so gloriously raised again to life by thy God; help us so to live on earth, that we also may rise again like unto thee in the last judgment-day.
Three Ave Marias.
ii. O Lady exalted, to whose risen body were given the gifts of brightness and of subtlety, by reason of the bright example and the humility of thy life on earth; pray for us, that all contemptuous affectation may be taken from us; that so our souls, being freed from all self-love, may be adorned with humility.
Three Ave Maria’s.
iii. O Lady exalted, by the gifts of agility and impassibility with which thy risen body was glorified, by reason of thy spiritual zeal and patience while on earth; obtain for us courage valiantly to mortify our bodies, and patiently to curb all our disordinate inclinations.
Three Ave Marias.
Then let us render due praise to Mary, and magnify the glory which adorned her risen body; while with the fifth choir we exalt her: The Litany of Our Lady :
Lord,
have mercy on us. (Christ have mercy on us.) Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, hear us. (Christ graciously hear us.) God, the Father of heaven, (have mercy on us.) EUROPE : NETHERLANDS : LIFE SIZED NOAH'S ARK COMPLETE
UCAN NEWS REPORT:
A replica has
been built that is as close to the original as possible.
A Dutch millionaire has built a full-size replica
of Noah’s Ark after dreaming his hometown would be destroyed by a flood of
biblical proportions.
Designer Johan Huibers finally opened the doors of his astonishing craft, which took over four years to build, to members of the public this week on the Merwede River, Dordrecht.
Using ancient dimensions set out in the Bible’s book of Genesis, the gigantic 137m x 21m ark also features its own ‘Bible museum’, complete with life-size plastic animals.
‘We want to tell people about God,’ the Dutchman, who worked with a team of 50 employees, told AFP during construction. ‘We wanted to build something that can help explain the Bible in real terms.’
He added: ‘The wood is Swedish pine, because that’s the closest we think to the ‘resin wood’ God ordered Noah to use in the Bible. The animals are plastic and come from the Philippines.’
The project stems from a dream the 52-year-old had in 1992, in which his native Holland was flooded by the North Sea.
‘The next day I bought a book about Noah’s Ark,’ he explained. ‘That night while sitting on the couch with my kids, I looked at it and said: “It’s what we’re going to do”.’
Huibers, who claims to have been contacted by dozens of people interested in staying on board the ark, originally wanted to sail the tribute to the London for the Olympic Games.
However he was forced to abandon the plans after Dutch authorities raised health and safety concerns about the proposed voyage.

AFRICA : KENYA : REFUGEE CAMP OVERFLOW - 100000 +
CISA NEWS REPORT:
KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP, August 7, 2012 (CISA) -Kakuma Refugee Camp has surpassed its capacity of 100,000 residents, creating serious concerns as more refugees continue to arrive.
According to UNHCR, by the end of July the population of the camp established in northern Kenya in 1992 had reached 100,009 following a steady influx of new arrivals over the past two years.
“The threat of conflict in neighbouring countries, particularly Sudan and South Sudan, is expected to continue to drive asylum seekers toward Kenya for the remainder of the year and into 2013,” said Guy Avognon, UNHCR’s Head of Sub-Office in Kakuma.
Through the first seven months of this year 12,123 individuals were registered in the camp, the majority having fled violence and conflict in South Sudan’s Jonglei State and Sudan’s South Kordofan. Significant numbers from Burundi, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have also sought asylum in Kakuma this year.
Avognon expressed concern about possible tension between camp residents and members of the local community due to the limited water and other resources in the area. The provision of life-saving assistance and important services is becoming increasingly difficult due to limited funding to cater for the growing population, particularly in the shelter, sanitation, education, and healthcare sectors.
“The sustained rate of new arrivals to the camp has already depleted all available land in the new settlement areas, and despite serious overcrowding in many parts of the camp, UNHCR and its partners are working to identify available space to settle new arrivals within existing settlements,” the head of the UNHCR sub-office said.
The increasing population is creating serious concerns for the operation as the boundaries of the camp cannot be extended further unless new sources of water are identified. Since the beginning of the year efforts to supply sufficient quantities of clean, safe drinking water have become a critical challenge, with refugees now receiving less than the standard 20 litres of water per person per day.
UNHCR’s discussions with the Kenyan government to establish a second camp have been ongoing for the past year, but as yet no agreement has been reached, though a potential site has been identified some 35 kilometres from Kakuma. UNHCR is optimistic the discussions will be successful and additional land will be made available before the end of the year.
However, an estimated US$16.7 million would be required to set up a second camp and UNHCR’s current financial constraints mean this would likely also pose significant challenges.

AUSTRALIA : ARCHBISHOP FISICHELLA ADDRESS ON NEW EVANGELISATION
Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese
REPORT
10 Aug 2012
The New Evangelisation needs a new dedication by all
Catholics, Archbishop Salvatore (Rino) Fisichella said in his keynote address at
the opening of the Proclaim 2012 Conference yesterday.
President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation in Rome, Archbishop Fisichella told 500 youth leaders, parish priests, religious, diocesan and parish staff, volunteers, educators, school principals and individuals of all ages that proclamation of the Gospel could not be delegated to others.
"Rather it requires the awareness specific to the believer," he said adding it was a "mistake to see the New Evangelisation purely as a response to strong pressure from secularism."
While he acknowledged the reality of such pressure, he emphasised that the primary motive for evangelisation had never changed in the 2000 year history of the Church and was a response to the Lord Jesus who commanded the faithful to go into the world and bring His Gospel to every creature.
Every Catholic was a bearer of Christ, he reminded those at the Conference.
He
also pointed to the close and special link between the New Evangelisation and
the liturgy as ideal opportunities to present and promote the
faith.
Baptisms, funerals and weddings brought many people into the church.
"But how many people who take part in these ceremonies are 'indifferent' to religion?" he asked and is convinced that while these people may appear to be indifferent in today's world many in fact were searching for genuine spirituality.
They want answers to questions such as "Who am I?" and "Where am I going ?"and need and want something to believe in, he said.
On his first visit to Australia, Archbishop Fisichella flew to Sydney for Proclaim 2012, Australia's first-ever national conference on the New Evangelisation.
The three-day conference is an initiative of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference (ACBC) and has been organised by Catholic Mission Australia and the Catholic Enquiry Centre's National Office for Evangelisation.
One of the key events celebrating the Year of Grace, Proclaim 2012 aims to deepen understanding of the New Evangelisation, showcase what is happening in evangelisation and the Catholic Church and begin developing a map for the future.
Proclaim 2012 with the wide range of seminars and line up of national and international speakers hopes to capture the energy, enthusiasm and experience of those involved in the New Evangelisation and spread this to parishes across the country.
"Many parishes know or have heard
about the New Evangelisation but want to learn more and have the information and
the tools to go out and evangelise among their parishes, schools and
communities," Marita Winters, Director of the Catholic Enquiry Centre's National
Office for the New Evangelisation explains. "The conference is about making
parishes stronger and our hope is that those attending will get a shot in the
arm that revitalises their faith and ministries."
Today's keynote address will be given by international speaker, trainer, ministry consultant, US-based Martha Fernandez-Sardina. With more than 20 years working in the fields of evangelisation, catechesis, apologetics and youth and young adult ministry, she is experienced at forming parish evangelisation teams, developing training and outreach programs.
In her address today she will focus on "Personal Conversion: An Indispensable Key in Personal and Parish Evangelisation."
Tomorrow morning, the final day of Proclaim 2012, Archbishop Fisichella will give his second keynote address at the conference with a talk entitled: "Jesus and the Year of Faith Impelling the New Evangelisation."
It is hoped the conference will be held every two years.

ASIA : INDIA : CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS DAY AGAINST DISCRIMINATION
ASIA NEWS REPORT:
by Nirmala Carvalho
Thousands take part in events across the country. On 10 August 1950, India adopted a law that discriminates against non-Hindu and non-Buddhist Dalits. In 62 years, nothing has changed. An appeal is made to India's new President Mukherjee and Sonia Gandhi for a quick change to the law.
Mumbai (AsiaNews) - "Christian Dalits are discriminated because of their faith. In a secular state like India, it is scandalous that non-Hindu and non-Buddhist Dalits are denied their rights on religious grounds," said Mgr Anthonisamy Neethinathan, chairman of the Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI). He spoke to AsiaNews on the occasion of Black Day, which marks the beginning of discrimination against Christian and Muslim Dalits.
Marked across the country, the event gave Dalits this year an opportunity to call on India's new president, Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) President Sonia Gandhi to abolish Paragraph 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, which denies Christian and Muslim Dalits the same rights as other Dalits.
Mgr Neethinathan noted that all Dalits that do not come under the law are held on the margins of society, hard pressed to find work and still subject to the absurd Hindu caste system. After 60 years of democracy, changing religion does not change Dalit status.
The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, assigns certain rights on the basis of Article 341 of the Indian Constitution. However, paragraph 3 explicitly says that "no person who professes a religion different from the Hindu [the Sikh or the Buddhist] religion shall be deemed to be a member of a Scheduled Caste." In 1956 and 1990, Buddhists and Sikhs were added to Hindus. Now only Christians and Muslims are still excluded.
The Order gives Hindu Dalits preferential treatment in the economic, educational and social fields, as well as job quotas in the public service.
Christian and Muslim Dalits have slammed the Order for violating the Indian constitution, like Article 14 (equality before the law), Article 15 (non-discrimination on grounds of religion) and Article 15 (freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion).
The National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities (aka the Ranganath Misra Commission) called for the replacement of the 1950 Order with something that would "completely de-link the Scheduled Caste status from religion and make the Scheduled Castes net fully religion-neutral like that of the Scheduled Tribes."
Various agencies and governments in 12 Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, have indicated their support for extending the Order to Christians and Muslims.
Similarly, the Indian Supreme Court has told the federal government on several occasions to solve the problem without getting an answer.
Despite protest marches and fasting (dharma) across the country over the past few years, politicians have not budged. Despite promises of a quick solution, they remain under the sway of Hindu culture and its legacy and fear the reaction of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the powerful Hindu nationalist party.
