ASIA NEWS IT: More than 200,000 people in Hong Kong streets for democracy and universal suffrage The traditional 1 July march, which has taken place every year since 1997 to mark the return of the territory to Chinese control, brought hundreds of thousands of people into the streets to challenge the local government to implement a real democratic system by the elections of 2017. By police account, 92,000 people took part in the event monitored by 4,000 agents in riot gear. Chief Executive Leung appealed for stability as the only guarantee for economic success.Hong Kong (AsiaNews) - Almost 200,000 people (according to early results) took part in today's rally for freedom and democracy in Hong Kong, shouting slogans in favour of universal suffrage and demanding the resignation of the Chief Executive CY Leung, accused by many of being "too close" to the government of mainland China.
According to police, who deployed 4,000 agents in riot gear along the route of the march, some 92,000 people took part in the event. Organisers counted instead half a million.
The 1 July march traditionally sets off from Victoria Park and runs to Beijing's Liaison Office in the autonomous region. The event has become a tradition after Britain handed over Hong Kong to mainland China on 1 July 1997, as pro-democracy activists began to take action to show their dissatisfaction with regards to local social and political issues.
In 2003, more than 500,000 people joined the march in order to stop a proposed security law under Article 23 of Hong Kong's Basic Law, and demand the resignation of certain senior public officials.
Since then, turnout has declined but never dipped below 150,000. Yet, for Beijing, the march is even more worrisome than the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre because it traditionally comes with demands to change the territory along democratic lines.
Organised by the Civil Human Rights Front, a coalition of various groups that include Catholic organisations, the march has sought greater independence from the mainland as well as an end to functional constituencies, which have led to a widening socioeconomic gap, in favour of the direct election of the territory's legislative council and chief executive.
This year's rally comes two days after an unofficial vote was held among Hong Kongers on universal suffrage. Almost 800,000 people voted in what for organisers was a way to vet what people think.
The referendum was supposed to be held on 20-22 June, but the most sophisticated and powerful hacker attack according to the authorities against Occupy Central's server forced organisers to extend voting to 29 June.
Hong Kong's Bishop Emeritus Card Joseph Zen on 20 June ended an 84-km march across Hong Kong to encourage citizens to participate in the referendum. Card John Tong, the current bishop, also expressed his support for the right of the people to give their views on democracy.
All the groups that have come forward have embraced universal suffrage for the election of the Chief Executive, an idea that Beijing defines as "inconsistent" and "contrary to the Basic Law," Hong Kong's British-made constitution.
The most voted proposal was presented by the Alliance for Real Democracy. Under its three-track plan the public, the nominating committee, as well as political parties, would be allowed to put forward candidates.
Speaking to the huge crowd gathered at Victoria Park, organisers challenged the government to try to ignore even this cry for democracy, floating the idea that new, more impressive rallies might take place if the governments of Hong Kong and mainland China do not allow the introduction of universal suffrage before the deadline.
Hong Kong leader CY Leung spoke earlier at a ceremony to mark the 17thanniversary of the former British colony's return to China.
"Only by maintaining Hong Kong's stability can we sustain our economic prosperity. Only by sustaining Hong Kong's prosperity can we improve people's livelihood," Mr Leung said.

| AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE HOLY SEE AND SERBIA Vatican City, 27 June 2014 (VIS) – Today in Belgrade a framework Agreement was signed between the Holy See and the Republic of Serbia on collaboration in higher education, which confirms the principles and defines the arrangement of duties between both parties in the field of higher education. The Agreement was signed on behalf of the Holy See by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States, and for the Republic of Serbia by the vice president of the government and minister of the Exterior, Ivica Dacic. According to the terms of the Agreement, the Parties will undertake to collaborate in the sector of higher education and to promote direct contract between institutions of this type. Furthermore, they will undertake to standardise the questions regarding mutual recognition of academic qualifications and public documents attesting to higher instruction. To implement this agreement, the two Parties will subsequently stipulate related additional protocols, by which the activities, as well as the organisational and financial conditions of implementation, shall be defined. The Agreement also recognises the right of the Catholic Church in Serbia to establish and direct Institutions of higher education both for ecclesiastical disciplines and other subjects of higher study. The Agreement will come into force on the date of receipt of the final information, by diplomatic means, pertaining to the fulfilment of all the requisites of the national legal systems of the two Parties for its implementation. |
| CANONICAL TRIAL OF EX NUNCIO JOZEF WESOLOWSKI Vatican City, 27 June 2014 (VIS) – The first stage in the canonical trial against the former apostolic nuncio in the Dominican Republic, Josef Wesolowski, has been concluded with the laicisation of the prelate. From this moment, the accused has two months in which to make an eventual appeal. (Vatican Radio) Pope Francis held a meeting in the Vatican on Tuesday morning with the Council of Cardinals.
It is the fifth time the Pope and the eight-member Council have met formally since Francis established the so-called “G8” to help him govern the Church and reform the Roman Curia.
The Cardinals who make up the Council are Giuseppe Bertello - President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State, Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa - Archbishop Emeritus of Santigo de Chile, Oswald Gracias - Archbishop of Bombay, Reinhard Marx - Archbishop of Munich, Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya - Archbishop of Kinshasa, Seán Patrick O'Malley OFM Cap - Archbishop of Boston, George Pell - Archbishop of Sydney and Óscar Andrés RodrÃguez Maradiaga SDB - Archbishop of Tegucigalpa.
They have been appointed with the specific task of advising the Pope on the government of the Universal Church and the revision of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus on the Roman Curia.

IMFC Release: It is blatantly obvious that without mothers there would be no life on the planet. There would be no civilization. Human beings simply would not exist.
Now, I must acknowledge mothers can't do it alone, but it is the mother who bears the child and traditionally has also provided the necessary child care to ensure its survival. There is an essential value of mothers to all of us.
Yet a distinction should be made between the mother and the act of 'mothering'-- one is a noun, the other, a verb.
Historically and biologically driven, the role of mothering has been, and to a large extent still is, primarily fulfilled by the biological mother. But with changes in family structures and shifts in values and priorities, this role is now often carried out by a variety of mother substitutes such as fathers, grandparents, adoptive, foster, step-parents or paid caregivers.

Mothering, whoever takes on the responsibility of raising the child, requires a strong and prolonged commitment toward the goal of maximizing human potential. Fraiberg notes the evidence from various sources converges to a consensus that the human capacity to love is formed in infancy and this bond should not only be considered as a “gift” of love to the baby, but a right -- "a birthright for every child."
Unfortunately, the recognition and awareness of the crucial role of mothering in a child's healthy development, and consequently, to future generations, is gradually being eroded. It is often seen as a secondary role in the scheme of our busy lives.
The devaluation of nurturing harms children
According to Fraiberg, "we are seeing a devaluation of parental nurturing and commitment to babies in our society, which may affect the quality and stability of the child's human attachments in ways that cannot yet be predicted."
Fraiberg warned deprivation of a mother or mother substitute will diminish the child's capacity for life, and that the numbers of such children are growing in our society.
One doesn't need to look far to see the truth in her words in today's world. Her cautionary notice is already apparent in the ever-growing numbers of troubled youth and young children as reflected in mental health issues and criminal behaviours.
In 2006, drug-related crimes among young people climbed dramatically compared with 10 years earlier making the rate of drug offences among youth nearly double (an increase of 97 per cent) during that period.
Canada has the ninth-highest rate of bullying in the 13-year-old category on a scale of 35 countries. At least one in three adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied recently and 47 per cent of Canadian parents report having a child who is a victim of bullying. Most disturbing is any participation in bullying increases the risk of suicidal thoughts in youth.
Time and again, social scientists have emphasized the importance of attachment in the early years to long-term healthy emotional, social and intellectual development. Time and again, they have told us what we can do to maximize the well-being of children. Yet, time and again, we turn a blind eye or a deaf ear.
The role of mothering continues to be eroded when it is, in fact, the most important contribution to society that can be made.
Fraiberg's words are as true today as they were in her time. The basic needs of children have not changed -- our values have. Our priorities have been rearranged as advertisers shape our wants into needs.
We did not invent childhood. We are only discovering what has likely existed since the beginning of time. As Doris Lessing pointed out in the CBC Massey Lectures, "... what we have, we take for granted. What we are used to, we cease to value."
The contradiction lies in the fact that, while we rightly honour our mothers annually on Mother's Day, at the same time we devalue their role. We have only one childhood and it provides the only opportunity to give our children the legacy by which they can change the future.
As Lloyd deMause says, "... the psychic structure of childhood must always be passed from generation to generation through the narrow funnel of childhood."
Mothering is a labour of love, and an investment, not only for the next generation, but for the future of civilization.

Mymensingh (AsiaNews) - Catholics in the Diocese of Mymensingh in Bangladesh are calling for a exemplary punishment and no impunity for the man who raped Balsree Chambugong, a disabled 8 years old Catholic girl. She was attacked June 27: the rapist, Sahab Ali, a Muslim of 25, is currently in prison. The little girl has been hospitalized for her injuries.
Initial reports reveal that the young man took advantage of a moment when the child was alone in her home. He dragged her out to a nearby bamboo field, where he raped her. Some neighbors heard Balsree screaming and managed to stop the man, and then call the police.
The little girl, a tribal of Garo ethnicity, is a member of the parish of St. George, Mariamnagar (district of Sherpur) and is the niece of Fr. Biolen Chambugong, a Catholic priest who works in Baluchora, another parish in the diocese.
Yesterday, students and local Catholics organized a protest to demand action. Fr. Shimon Hacha, senior priest of the Diocese of Mymensingh, told AsiaNews: "Christian Women and girls are not safe in their homes. We need security from the local authorities".

.Baghdad (Agenzia Fides) - The Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans, Louis Raphael I Sako, has made a public appeal to "those who are holding the nuns and orphans kidnapped in Mosul three days ago". According to Fides Agency, the appeal expresses concern for the fate of the two nuns and three young people - two girls and a boy - asking for them to be released soon. In particular, the Patriarch turns to Muslim religious leaders and sheikhs of Sunni tribes in Mosul, asking them to do "everything possible" to secure the release of the hostages. In the appeal, the Chaldean Patriarch cites verses from the Koran that indicate to all believers to treat monks and orphans well, and highlights that Christians "were the first to receive the Muslim conquerors 14 centuries ago" and that currently in Iraq Christians do not identify with any political party. "This - concludes Patriarch Sako - is the Month of Ramadan, the month of mercy and charity. Let us all pray for the release of the nuns and orphans kidnapped".

Since Saturday June 28 we have no news about Sister Atur and Sister Miskinta, two Chaldean religious of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate who were returning to Mosul from the city of Dohuk in the company of two Christian girls and a Christian boy. The two nuns run a foster home for orphans in Mosul, near the Chaldean archbishopric. Due to the Islamist offensive which began on June 9, the nuns and all the guests had left the family home in Mosul and found refuge in the city of Dohuk, in Iraqi Kurdistan.
