PRESENTATION OF THE SEVENTH WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES
Vatican City, 22 May 2012 (VIS) - Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family; Cardinal Angelo Scola, archbishop of Milan, Italy, and Pierpaolo Donati, professor at the department of sociology of the University of Bologna, Italy, today presided at a press conference held in the Holy See Press Office to present the seventh World Meeting of Families, which will take place in Milan from 30 May to 3 June on the theme: "The Family: Work and Celebration".
Cardinal Antonelli focused his remarks on preparations for the forthcoming event, which was announced by the Holy Father at the end of the last World Meeting of Families, held in Mexico City in 2009. Over the intervening three years, the Pontifical Council for the Family has met on various occasions with the archbishop of Milan and his closest collaborators in order to combine their efforts for the Milan meeting.
The cardinal listed some of the preparatory initiatives organised by his council. These included: the translation of the catechesis into Italian, French, English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Arabic and Russian; an international academic seminar on "The Christian Family as the Subject of Evangelisation" (Rome 2009); the council's nineteenth plenary assembly on "The Rights of Infancy" (Rome 2010); an international academic seminar with pro-life associations (Rome 2010); an international congress on "The Christian Family as the Subject of Evangelisation" (Rome 2010), and the council's twentieth plenary assembly, held in Rome in 2011, which coincided with the thirtieth anniversary of the Apostolic Exhortation "Familiaris consortio" and of the creation of the Pontifical Council for the Family itself.
Cardinal Antonelli also presented the "Enchiridion", a manual bringing together the Apostolic See's most recent teachings on the subject of the family and human life, dating from the final years of the pontificate of John Paul II and from the pontificate of Benedict XVI. "The aim of the publication", the cardinal explained, "is to provide a useful consultative instrument for pastoral care workers, associations, pro-life and pro-family movements, academics, teachers and politicians. It covers a wide range of subjects including: the theology and anthropology of the family, ... inter-religious marriage, regulation of fertility, demography, the ethic of life from conception to natural death, the ethics of health, the rights of minors, ... the family as the subject of evangelisation, ... and attention to canonically irregular situations".
Another volume, entitled "The Family, a Resource for Society", was also presented during the press conference. "It contains", the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family said, "new research which throws light on the different contributions, positive and negative, which the various forms of family and cohabitation bring to society".
For his part Cardinal Scola noted that the theme of the Milan meeting, "by bringing together the three fundamental aspects of man's daily life - family, work and rest - highlights two major traits ... of human experience all over the world: the uniqueness of individuals and the fact that they are always in relation with others. Thus this seventh World Meeting of Families has interpreted the perennial importance of these questions, and of this particular historical moment".
The archbishop of Milan went on: "The family founded on faithful marriage between a man and a woman, and open to life, over and above all the cultural developments that have affected it, still imposes itself as the best way to generate and raise children. In the family the child ... sees the future as a promise. From infancy we all discover the meaning of work, first as school work and them as a profession. Through work ... we develop complex social relationships. ... We discover a taste for building, ... but above all we gain a sense of reciprocal trust, which is the vital cement of human coexistence.
"Life imposes its rhythm on us", he added. "It requires us to establish an order between family affections and work. In doing this we are helped by rest, which marks the rhythm of life. ... Celebration is the apex of rest, a gratuitous and shared use of time and space which is a source of joy. Man becomes reconciled with himself, with others and with God. It is no coincidence that all religious traditions have always utilised celebration".
Finally Cardinal Scola of Milan spoke of the interest the seventh World Meeting of Families is arousing in the media. The family, he said, is the focus of attention because it is an "indispensable resource, a 'social capital' which requires specific policies, perhaps also as a result of the serious economic crisis we are in". He also provided some statistics on the forthcoming meeting, noting that more than a million faithful are expected to attend the papal Mass, and 300,000 the Feast of Testimonies.

EUROPE : GERMANY : KATHOLIKENTAG WITH OVER 30000
RADIO VATICANA REPORT:
The German Church is holding its bi-annual meeting, more commonly known as Katholikentag, in Mannheim, with over 30 thousand participants and guests assembled to discuss, worship, celebrate and share the current state of the Church in Pope Benedict XVI’s homeland. Before listening to a report from Jesuit Father Bernd Hagenkord who heads Vatican Radio’s German Programme and who’s currently in Mannheim Veronica Scarisbrick shines the spotlight for a moment on this organisation as well as take a look at Pope Benedict’s recent words to the members of this organisation .
As we know from the 22-25 September 2011 Pope Benedict visited Germany. The choice of cities on this second visit back to the homeland included the nation’s capital Berlin ( this was his first official visit to the nation) , Erfurt the land of Luther and finally Freiburg, the city whose inhabitants decided in 1520 not to take part in the Reformation, proving their independence from outside influence. The city was not named Freiburg meaning “free borough” for nothing.
It was here in what is Catholic territory in the South West tip of Germany, ruled for centuries by the Catholic Habsburgs that he dedicated time to this lay organization which in Germany wields a lot of influence. Even Catholic members of Parliament adhere to it.
The Katholikentag then as it’s popularly referred to is an organisation called 'Zentralkomitee derr Deutschen Katholiken' , or 'Central Committee of German Catholics ' led by its President Mr Alois Gluck. A lay apostolate founded in 1952 which grew out of an earlier 19th century movement. One which seamlessly combines independence with loyalty to the Church, and commitment within the Church with social and political action.
While in Germany the Holy Father addressed representatives of this lay apostolate , speaking to them of new evangelization. On this occasion among the other issues he touched on was that of how high standards of living do not exclude poverty in human relations and poverty in the religious sphere.
But on Thursday Benedict XVI also addressed the current Katholikentag gathering in Mannheim. Picking up on new evangelization he began by quoting the motto of this meeting : “ Daring to begin afresh'. A renewal which stems from God, the Pope said must always follow a personal path which leads to God . We are called to grow in faith as well as live accordingly in our daily lives. But we are not alone or isolated from others. We believe together and within the community of the Church. The path to God begins for all faithful both within and with the Church .
This 98th Katholikentag, Benedict XVI went on to say is in a sense the first step towards the Year of Faith called to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the opening session of the Second Vatican Council .
Having touched there briefly on Pope Benedict’s words, we now bring you Jesuit Father Bernd Hagenkord’s report :
"The book containing all the events of this „Katholikentag“ is nearly 600 pages long, all 1.200 events show the breadth and length of the catholic Church in Germany. There are lectures and discussions, there are presentations and new initiatives, and as during every „Katholikentag“ the city is strewn with white tents, every one of them containing an initiative, parish, diocese, association, or other catholic organization. Ecumenism, mission, parish organization, moral theology, music, social responsibility: There seems to be no topic not represented here. The whole four day meeting is framed by liturgies and prayer-services.
A particular focus this year is local Church. For lack of money, of priests many parishes have had to be merged with other parishes, creating administrative units rather than living communities. So the focus is on how to make this work and how to bring to life this changing structure with new initiatives or ideas.
This meeting of Catholics shows the signs of the times. Alois Gluck, president of the German Catholics lay council which organizes the „Katholikentag“, comments during a press conference on the character of the event. It shows the signs of the times to the church as well as the contribution the Church can make to the society. The event wants to inspire all those coming here.
This seems to be a rather necessary thing, since the Church perceives itself as being in crisis. After the sex-abuse scandals and the loss of significant numbers of Catholics, many perceive the church as being stale or numb, without answers to today’s crisis or challenges. Therefore the title of the meeting is „Aufbruch“ - meaning departure as well as new start. The Church - hierarchy as well as laity - want to find a way out of what Alois Gluck called the inner blockade in many questions. The price to pay is to give up a lot of much-loved customs or structures. However, this is necessary to move the Church forward. How to do this: to discuss that is what this Katholikentag is for. "

AMERICA : OVER 40 CATHOLIC ORGANIZATIONS AND DIOCESES - HHS LAWSUITS
Over 40 Catholic diocese and organizations are suing the
Obama administration for violating religioius freedom of the First Amedment to
the Constitution. This initiative is led by Cardinal Dolan. There are 12
separate lawsuits being pursued.
These laws suits are opposing the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate that obliges insurance plans to fund sterilizations and FDA contraceptives, including abortifacients.
These laws suits are opposing the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate that obliges insurance plans to fund sterilizations and FDA contraceptives, including abortifacients.
Since the Catholic Church teaches that sterilization,
artificial contraception and abortion are morally wrong this mandate violates
the religious freedom of the Catholics in the USA.

ASIA : CHINA : ACTIVIST CHEN IN NEW YORK BUT FAMILY SUFFERS
ASIA NEWS REPORT:
The blind dissident spends time in a New York park. "For the past seven years, I have never had a day's rest," he said. For his mentor, Prof Cohen, NYU is ready for him. His wife may join him in his studies. Meanwhile, his family in China continues to endure the authorities' vendetta.
New York (AsiaNews) - Chen Guangcheng, the blind dissident known for his fight against forced abortions, could start his legal studies at New York University (NYU) as early as next week as university staff wrap up a research plan for the newly arrived blind legal activist. Lectures will be given in Chinese since Chen does not speak English. His wife, Yuan Weijing, may join him in his studies. The couple arrived in the United States with their children.
The Chen Guangcheng affair broke out on 26 April when the dissident escaped from house arrest the authorities had imposed on him after four years of prison.
A diplomatic tug-of-war between Beijing and Washington began when he found refuge at the US Embassy in Beijing, at a time when the two nations were holding their annual bilateral summit.
After two days of impasse, Chen left the embassy on the condition that he be allowed to leave the country. He was sent to hospital where he was placed under police guard until he left last Saturday.
Chen "wants to go back to China and he should go back to China. That's our goal," said Law professor Jerome Cohen, who served as mentor to the self-taught lawyer. "It is hard to be a foreigner here and for a refugee trying to have an impact."
Cohen said he believed Chen had a good chance of returning should he focus on legislation to protect the disabled. He noted that more Chinese activists had been pressing for legal reforms without being jailed, such as civil rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang.
Meanwhile, Chen Guangcheng has begun to enjoy his freedom. With his wife and children, he spent Sunday at a park in New York. "For the past seven years, I have never had a day's rest," he said, "so I have come here for a bit of recuperation."
However, the situation for his family back in Shandong seems to be getting worse. His nephew Chen Kegui is still in prison, persecuted by police, and unable to find a lawyer to represent him.
The Chinese Human Rights Defender (CHRD) obtained a letter addressed to the police chief of the Yinan County Public Security Bureau (PSB) in Shandong Province contesting the police's unlawful interference in their efforts to defend Chen Kegui.
The latter was formally arrested two weeks ago on suspicion of "intentional homicide" for acting in self-defence when a group of police officers and thugs broke into his home searching for his uncle who had escaped. The charge is absurd because no one was killed in the incident.
Lawyers Ding Xikui, of the Beijing Mo Shaoping Firm (which takes on human rights cases), and Si Weijiang, of the Shanghai Dabang Law Firm, wrote the letter. Both have been authorised by Chen Kegui's wife to represent her husband.
According to the letter, Chen Kegui's wife retained Ding and Si to represent her husband after two other lawyers she had hired, Liu Weiguo and Chen Wuquan, were intimidated and harassed by authorities.
For the two lawyers, Chen Kegui's arrest and detention have no legal basis. "We believe," Ding and Si said in their letter, that the "Bureau's conduct violates the Criminal Procedural Law of the People's Republic of China and other administrative and legal regulations, and seriously violates the legal rights of Chen Kegui and lawyers' lawful rights to carry out their profession."
So far, the accused has not yet met any lawyer of his choosing.

AFRICA : KENYA : SOLUTION IMPLEMENTATION OF CPA
Addressing hundreds of South Sudanese residing in Kenya at Nairobi’s Railway Club grounds on May 16 during the marking of 29th Day of SPLM/A, Mr Wani said the CPA was very crucial in sorting out the prevailing issues.
“The Government of South Sudan and its entire people strongly believe that nothing short of abiding with the contents of the CPA on both sides- South Sudan and the Sudan Governments will bring to an end the current border crisis between the two countries,” he said.
Mr Wani urged the South Sudanese in Diaspora to continue to support the Government in its efforts to bring to an end the current border crisis as well as the on-going inter-community civil conflicts facing the country.
Meanwhile an official at the South Sudan Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, Mr Peter G Jok, on May 17 told CISA in a telephone interview that the Government was most willing to resume talks on the border crisis, as requested by the United Nations.
The UN had given the two parties, the South Sudan and the Sudan a deadline of May 16, which has elapsed.
“It would seem the Sudan Government is not as willing as we are on the issue,” he remarked.
“For us, we are ready, simply waiting for a signal from Mr Thabo Mbeki (former South African President), Chairman of the African Union High Implementation panel that is mediating between Sudan and South Sudan,” said Mr Jok, the Embassy’s Third Secretary.
On the role of the Church in the current inter-community conflicts in South Sudan, Mr. Jok praised churches for their commitment in combating the issue.
“The churches are currently engaged on peace-building among the affected communities. They are busy holding meetings and workshops on peace and reconciliation among the affected communities,” he further told CISA.
The Embassy official hopes that a solution to the current border crisis as well as the inter-community conflicts affecting some communities in some parts of the country will amicably be sorted out.

17: 1 - 11 | |
1 | When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son that the Son may glorify thee, |
2 | since thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. |
3 | And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. |
4 | I glorified thee on earth, having accomplished the work which thou gavest me to do; |
5 | and now, Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made. |
6 | "I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and thou gavest them to me, and they have kept thy word. |
7 | Now they know that everything that thou hast given me is from thee; |
8 | for I have given them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from thee; and they have believed that thou didst send me. |
9 | I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine; |
10 | all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them. |
11 | And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. |

To be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light: and listen to Your voice and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You / by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds / and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart / I implore You / Adorable Spirit I Helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace O Holy Ghost, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere / "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen.

DAY 5 OF NOVENA
Light
immortal! Light Divine! Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being
fill!
The Gift of
KnowledgeThe gift of Knowledge enables the soul to evaluate created things at their true worth--in their relation to God. Knowledge unmasks the pretense of creatures, reveals their emptiness, and points out their only true purpose as instruments in the service of God. It shows us the loving care of God even in adversity, and directs us to glorify Him in every circumstance of life. Guided by its light, we put first things first, and prize the friendship of God beyond all else. "Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it."
Prayer
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant that I may perceive the will of the Father; show me the nothingness of earthly things, that I may realize their vanity and use them only for Thy glory and my own salvation, looking ever beyond them to Thee, and Thy eternal rewards. Amen(Our Father and Hail Mary ONCE. Glory be to the Father 7 TIMES. Act of Consecration, Prayer for the Seven Gifts)
