POPE APPOINTS BISHOP FOR THE PHILIPPINES
AMERICA
UCAN reports that over 100 policemen and security officials have attacked Catholics from a parish in central Vietnam while they were erecting a temporary structure for worship.
The diocesan secretary Phung said that "more than 20 local Catholics were hit severely, pushed into military vehicles and detained" in the incident.
He said that on July 20, 150 Catholics from Tam Toa parish were setting up a temporary worship structure in their church compound when they were prevented from doing so by the officials.
Father Pierre Le Thanh Hong said many people resisted and were hit and detained.
He said the officials pulled down a wooden cross and even attacked women who tried to prevent them from carrying it away. They also carried away iron sheets and other building materials as well as two generators, he added. Father Hong, who is pastor of Sen Bang parish, said many Catholics' cameras and video recorders were also confiscated.
The parish is in Dong Hoi city, capital of Quang Binh province.
According to local Church records, Tam Toa church was damaged during the Vietnam War (1959-1975). Only its bell tower and walls are presently standing.
Local Catholics have been attending Mass held in the open in the church compound or at their homes since the end of the war. The parish also has not had any resident priest from 1964 to 2006, until Father Hong was assigned to serve the area, which now has about 1,000 parishioners.

NIGERIAN CLERICS OPPOSE TAXES ON PLACES OF WORSHIP
AllAfrica.com reports that religious leaders in Lagos opposed planned imposition of taxes on donations made to religious bodies. They describe it as unconstitutional.
The state government has concluded plans to impose taxes on income accruable to religious leaders and organisations, arguing that they all make use infrastructure built with other tax payers' money and must contribute their own quota.
The Christian & Islamic leaders suggested not to tax donations to religious bodies but use revenue generated from taxes to religious organisations that have invested in social services like provision of schools and healthcare facilities.
Governor, Babatunde Fashola said the controversial aspect of the tax system for religion leaders and organisations in the state was federal law.
Fashola argued that there could not be perfection in law making. His words: "When the law was drafted, it was done due to the limit of those who put up the law."
Luke 9: 1 - 6
And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal.
And he said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.
And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.
And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them."
And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

FAMOUS ITALIAN PRAISES POPES NEW ENCYCLICAL
CNA reports that the Italian Giuseppe Tamburrado (politician) who led the Italian Socialist Party, praised the new social encyclical by Pope Benedict XVI.
He said that “the voice of the Pope has been heard with Caritas in veritate and his call to the G-8 on July 12. In “Rerum novarum, Leo XIII distinguished between two dominant contenders—liberalism and socialism—and affirmed the superiority of a solid economy at the service of the human person. With Mater et magistra, the Church of John XXIII, aware of its strong authority, opened itself to dialogue, above all with one of the contenders: that of socialism.” He continued that with this Pontiff “neither socialism nor liberalism. But he is faced with an unjust and jagged economic system that ignores the tragedies of misery, hunger, illiteracy, infant mortality, inequality, war between the poor, fanaticism, racism, human and drug trafficking: the list is long.” “Liberalism has failed leaving behind immense injustices. Socialism is no more,” he said.
“Is the Church really the only one able to call for a truly humane economy and to give voice to the marginalized of the earth, as well as to the imperative of equal dignity for all men, all women and all children?” Tamburrano asked.
