VATICAN: POPE MESSAGE FROM PALERMO ITALY
Asia News report: On visit to Palermo Benedict XVI asks the faithful of the city to walk in holiness and to be shining witnesses even in “difficult situations”. The model of the saints who have gone before: Don Pino Puglisi, who was killed by the Mafia, Anna Maria Adorni, beatified today, known as the "Living Rosary" for her constant prayer, evangelizer of women's prisons. In an indirect reference to the problem of the mafia, the pope says that one should not be ashamed of witnessing to the Gospel, but of evil "that offends God and man," the evil inflicted on civil and religious communities, with actions that loath the light of day”. . "- "Mary is the model of Christian life. I ask her above all to help you all walk the path of holiness, briskly and with joy, in the footsteps of many shining examples of Christ” this was the Pope’s prayer before today's Angelus, at the end of Mass celebrated in Palermo where he is on pastoral visit, the occasion of the regional church gathering of families and young people. Recalling that October is traditionally the month dedicated to the Rosary, Benedict XVI added: "The daily meditation on the mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, the Virgin at prayer, strengthens us all in faith, hope and charity.""To the Virgin Mary - the pope observed - I wish to commend all the people of God living in this beloved land. May She support families in love and education; make fruitful the seeds of vocation that God amply sows among young people, instill courage in the face of trials, hope amidst difficulties, renewed energy in doing good. The Madonna comforts the sick and all the suffering, and helps the Christian communities so that no one in them is marginalized or needy, but everyone, especially the smallest and weakest, feels welcomed and valued. "Benedict XVI has also devoted part of his homily during the mass to the theme of "walking expediently and joyfully on the path of holiness in the footsteps of many shining examples of Christ". "Your beautiful island - he said - was among the first regions of Italy to accept the faith of the Apostles to receive the proclamation of the Word of God, to adhere to the faith so generously that even in the midst of difficulties and persecution, it has always seen the flourishing of the flower of holiness. Sicily was and is a land of saints, belonging to every walk of life, who lived the Gospel with simplicity and integrity. "Also in the homily, the pope urged Sicilian Catholics to "witness the faith in the various sectors of society, in many situations of human existence, especially in those that are difficult".Benedict XVI did not mention the word "mafia", but made indirect references when he asked Catholics not to be ashamed to be Christian witnesses: "One should be ashamed of that evil - he added - which offends God, that offends man, one should be ashamed of the evil that is inflicted on civil and religious communities with actions that loath the light of day”."The temptation to discouragement, resignation, comes to those who are weak in faith, to those who confuse evil with good, to those who believe that there is nothing to be done before evil, often of the deepest kind. Instead, those who are firmly founded in faith, who have full confidence in God and live in the Church are able to bring the uncontainable power of the Gospel. This is how the saints behaved, who flowered, over the centuries, in Palermo and in Sicily, as well as lay people and priests of today who are well-known to you all, such as, for example, Don Pino Puglisi. Tmay they always watch over you and keep you united and nurture in everyone the desire to proclaim, in word and deed, the presence and love of Christ. People of Sicily, look with hope to your future”.In his reflection before the Angelus, Benedict XVI also mentioned another great witness of lay faith: Anna Maria Adorni (1805-1893), beatified today in Parma. "In the nineteenth century - said the pope – she was exemplary wife and mother and when widowed, she devoted herself to charity for women in prison and in difficulty, for whose needs she founded two religious institutes. Mother Adorni, because of her constant prayer, was called the 'Living Rosary'".

AMERICA: USA: VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN AT ANNUAL MASS FOR COURTS
CNN REPORT: Vice President Joe Biden joined five Supreme Court justices to attend Sunday's annual Red Mass, the Roman Catholic service for the courts that has drawn criticism in recent years.Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, Stephen Breyer and Clarence Thomas attended the service, held at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, on the eve of the court's new term. The Mass was started in 1952 by the John Carroll Society, a lay Catholic group of prominent lawyers and professionals, to celebrate the legal profession. But the event has drawn criticism in recent years for what many see as an unhealthy mix of politics, religion and the law.The mass is a Catholic service, but power brokers of other faiths are asked to attend the invitation-only event. Critics have called the attendance of leading decision-makers, including members of the highest court in the land, inappropriate.Past homilies by individual speakers have lamented the high court's ruling legalizing abortion and the constitutional separation of church and state, although most recent Red Mass ceremonies have avoided hot-button social and political issues to focus on universal themes. Church officials insist they do not attempt to lobby or seek to persuade anyone who attends the service.Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia, who gave this year's sermon, told parishioners the church understands the "nearly overwhelming complexity of the climate which envelops the practice of law and the administration of justice today.""No informed observer can fail to acknowledge that the social and cultural pluralism of our times - not to mention the relentless and sometimes pitiless public scrutiny to which you are subjected - makes the work of judges and lawyers today very hard indeed," he said. The archbishop also asserted that laws are based upon certain principles: "the pursuit of the common good through respect for the natural law, the dignity of the human person, the inviolability of innocent life from conception to natural death, the sanctity of marriage, justice for the poor, protection of minors, and so on."Di Noia later decried a trend toward "exclusive humanism" and said, "That innocent human life is now so broadly under threat has seemed to many of us one of the signs of this growing peril." Washington archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Gibbs told CNN afterwards that the reference to "innocent human life" was meant "broadly," referring to "all life that is at risk, not just simply the unborn, but the fragility of all human life."All the justices who attended Sunday are Catholics except Breyer, who is Jewish. The court is currently made up of six Catholics and three Jews, including its newest member, Elena Kagan. One member of the court who no longer attends is Ruth Bader Ginsburg who, like Breyer and Kagan, is Jewish. Ginsburg has said she grew tired of being lectured by Catholic officials."I went one year, and I will never go again, because this sermon was outrageously anti-abortion," Ginsburg said in the book "Stars of David: Prominent Jews talk About Being Jewish" by author Abigail Pogrebin. "Even the Scalias - although they're much of that persuasion - were embarrassed for me."

TODAY'S SAINT: ST. GERARD OF BROGNE
St. Gerard of BrogneABBOTFeast: October 1Information:Feast Day:October 1Born:895 at Staves, Namur, BelgiumDied:3 October 959 at Brogne, BelgiumMajor Shrine:Saint-Gérard, NamurPatron of:Saint-Gérard, NamurBorn at Staves in the county of Namur, towards the end of the ninth century; died at Brogne or St-Gérard, 3 Oct. 959. The son of Stance, of the family of dukes of Lower Austrasia, and of Plectrude, sister of Stephen, Bishop of Liège, the young Gérard, like most omen of his rank, followed at first the career of arms. His piety, however, was admirable amid the distractions of camp. He transformed into a large church a modest chapel situated on the estate of Brogne which belonged to his family. About 917, the Count of Namur charged him with a mission to Robert, younger brother of Eudes, King of France. He permitted his followers to reside at Paris, but himself went to live at the Abbey of St-Denis, where he was so struck by the deifying lives of the monks that, at the conclusion of his embassy, with the consent of the Count of Namur and Bishop Stephen, his maternal uncle, he returned to St-Denis, took the religious habit, and after eleven years was ordained priest. He then requested to be allowed to return to Brogne, where he replaced the lax clerics with monks animated by a true religious spirit. Thereupon he himself retired to a cell near the monastery for more austere mortification. From this retreat he was summoned by the Archbishop of Cambrai who confided to him the direction of the community of St-Ghislain in Hainault. Here also he established monks instead of the canons, whose conduct had ceased to be exemplary, and he enforced the strictest monastic discipline. Gradually he became superior of eighteen other abbeys situated in the region between the Meuse, the Somme, and the sea, and through his efforts the Order of St. Benedict was soon completely restored throughout this region. Weighed down by age and infirmities, he placed vicars or abbots in his stead, in the various abbeys with which he was charged, and retired to that of Brogne. He still had courage to take a journey to Rome in order to obtain a Bull confirming the privileges of that abbey. On his return he paid a final visit to all the communities which he had reorganized, and then awaited death at Brogne. His body is still preserved at Brogne, now commonly calledSt-Gérard.

27TH SUN. IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR C
Habakkuk 1: 2 - 32O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and thou wilt not hear? Or cry to thee "Violence!" and thou wilt not save?3Why dost thou make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise.Habakkuk 2: 2 - 42And the LORD answered
Habakkuk 1: 2 - 32O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and thou wilt not hear? Or cry to thee "Violence!" and thou wilt not save?3Why dost thou make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise.Habakkuk 2: 2 - 42And the LORD answered
me: "Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it.3For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end -- it will not lie. If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay.4Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith.Psalms 95: 1 - 2, 6 - 91O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!2Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!6O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!7For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O that today you would hearken to his voice!8Harden not your hearts, as at Mer'ibah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,9when your fathers tested me, and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.2 Timothy 1: 6 - 8, 13 - 146Hence I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands;7for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control.8Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God,13Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus;14guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.Luke 17: 5 - 105The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"6And the Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, `Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.7"Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come
in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'?8Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'?9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?10So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"
