VATICAN: POPE: SPEAKS ON PEACE AND POVERTY
RADIO VATICANA REPORT: Looking out on a St Peter’s Square where construction has already begun on this years nativity scene, Pope Benedict, before reciting the Angelus, took the opportunity to discuss the current economic crisis. On this Sunday of Thanksgiving in Italy, the Pope said, this current crisis recently discussed by the G20 leaders was but another aspect of serious problems such as "the continuing imbalance between wealth and poverty, the scandal of hunger, environmental emergencies now also widespread, and the problem of unemployment". The Pope added, that at times the process of industrialization has overshadowing the agricultural sector, and called for a reassessment of this valuable sector, not in a nostalgic sense, he said, but “as an indispensable resource for the future".Continuing on this theme the Holy Father stressed that a “concerted effort must be made to pursue a new balance between agriculture, industry and services, so that development is sustainable”.Key to this he said was “the nurturing and spreading of a clear ethical awareness, capable of meeting the most complex challenges of our time,.”After reciting the Angelus prayer Pope Benedict made a call for peace in Iraq and appealed to the international community to "generously support" the people of Haiti, who he said, "because of the terrible earthquake in January, are now suffering for a serious outbreak of cholera. "The Pope concluded by saying that next Saturday the 27 November in St Peter's Basilica, he would preside at Vespers for the first Sunday of Advent and a prayer vigil for the unborn. The Holy Father added that this initiative is shared with particular Churches throughout the world and he recommended it be also held in parishes, religious communities, associations and movements. Finally, the Pope said, the period of preparation for Christmas is a good time to invoke divine protection upon every human being called into existence, and also as a thanksgiving to God for the gift of life received from our parents. ASIA: MYANMAR: DEMOCRACY LEADER KYI RELEASED
CBC REPORT: Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, speaking to supporters a day after she was released from years of house arrest, said she will continue to fight for human rights and the rule of law in military-ruled Burma.Aung San Suu Kyi is surrounded as supporters gather to hear her speak outside the National League for Democracy party headquarters in Rangoon. (Soe Zeya Tun/Reuters)She also called for face-to-face talks with the junta's leader. She last met with Gen. Than Shwe in secret talks in 2002 at the urging of the United Nations. However, the measured tone of her remarks on Sunday indicated she is well aware she is walking a tightrope in balancing the expectations of the country's democracy movement and the realities of limited freedom under a tough military regime.Speaking in Rangoon to a crowd of more than 5,000 people at the dilapidated headquarters of her political party, the 65-year-old 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner urged her followers to work for national reconciliation in Burma, also known as Myanmar."If we want to get what we want, we have to do it in the right way; otherwise we will not achieve our goal, however noble or correct it may be," she said.Suu Kyi spent 15 of the past 21 years in detention without trial because of her opposition to military rule. She was allowed to leave her lakeside residence Saturday after a term lasting 7½ years. She insisted she felt "no antagonism" toward those who kept her under house arrest and that she was "well treated."But she called on the military junta that has ruled Burma for 48 years to "treat the people well also." Suu Kyi said the "basis of democratic freedom is freedom of speech" and urged supporters to "stand up for what is right."She ended her speech by saying one woman's expression is not democracy. "We must walk together," she told the crowd.Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/11/14/suu-kyi-burma.html#ixzz15HzUkaqb

Those who understand this and take full advantage of its benefits will certainly go far," she said."We have seen this happening over the last two years, as demonstrated by the extraordinary partnership between the Maranyundo Initiative and the Benebikira Congregation - both driven by their commitment to creating an all-round, high quality education for girls."Just like the Maranyundo School started out of a vision, she added, Rwanda as a country also has a vision and goals it is working very hard towards achieving and that the integral part of the vision is educating and developing one of Rwanda's most important resources - its people. She warned female students of the dangers of HIV/AIDS, early marriages and unplanned pregnancies. The State Minister for Education in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr. Mathias Harebamungu, commended the founders of the school for the efforts towards educating the girl child and reiterated the government commitment to support the school to even add the A' Level section.Sister Anne Fox, who is one of the founders and Joyce Fletcher, who signed the MoU on behalf of the founders, both noted that much as the management of the school has changed, they will remain in touch with the new management on the day-to-day running of the school. The new management comprises of the headmistress Sister Felicite Mukashema and Sister Dominic Thierry, the Superior General of Benebikira Congregation and a board of governors chaired by Dr. Eugene Mutimura.Maranyundo Girls School targets girls whose opportunity for education is limited by financial constraints and it supports students from all over country - 75% from Bugesera district and 25% from the remaining districts. The Benebikira are a Catholic congregation that started in 1919 in Rwanda. AMERICA: MEXICO: PASTORS POSTPONE MASS TO PROTECT POPULATION
Agenzia Fides REPORT –Pastors authorized to cancel liturgical celebrations to protect population from violenceThe Mexican Bishops' Conference (CEM) has authorized the priests of the areas hardest hit by the violence plaguing the country to suspend celebrations or change Mass schedules in order to "protect the population." The CEM says: "We must avoid situations that may occur, avoiding the danger and taking appropriate measures to protect the public" Efe Agency was told by Father Manuel Corral, Director of Public Relations of the CEM.The Secretary General of the CEM and the Bishop of Texcoco, Bishop Victor Rene Rodriguez, announced during the Plenary Assembly of the CEM that every pastor can change the schedule of Masses, courses, and other pastoral activities in the afternoon, if necessary, but in no case should they abandon their places. In this year 2010 alone, the struggle between clans in drug trafficking in Mexico has caused about 10,000 violent deaths, according to the press. For now, this provision covers the northern states such as Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Sinaloa, said Father Corral, although the situation in some parishes in other areas such as Michoacán, Veracruz, and the upper area (Sierra) of Puebla has already led some priests to change the time of the Mass, or even cancel a celebration, to prevent acts of violence.Local sources of Fides, which for safety reasons are not cited, say that many priests are blackmailed or threatened because they help the people most in need and other priests say nothing to their community although they are threatened by known or suspected members of clans or gangs. "It is not always easy to say no to the baptism of a child of a family that works with these gangs, or continue to celebrate Mass when you recognize certain figures not well-liked by the authorities entering the church, or bless a house or car of a person who seems very good, but who belongs to these groups that are dangerous to society," the source of Fides says. http://www.fides.org/aree/news/newsdet.php?idnews=27803&lan=eng

AUSTRALIA: CARDINAL PELL DISCOURAGES GAMBLING
CATH NEWS REPORT: Speaking at an ethics in business lunch yesterday, Cardinal George Pell said that gambling isn't intrinsically wrong - unless it becomes an addiction. He added that countries could produce arms morally, to defend thenselves, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.Cardinal Pell said on the proliferation of poker machines in NSW Catholic clubs: ''I must confess I do feel a bit uneasy about that, but only a bit uneasy,'' he admitted. ''Because culturally I'm an Irish Australian and we grew up gambling.''Only when it became an addiction, threatening the well-being of oneself and one's family, did it become a sin.Speaking on ''God and Mammon: need or greed in the big end of town'', Cardinal Pell said at the lunch, hosted by Notre Dame University, that as far as the ethics of selling tobacco went, supplying adults who were aware of the risks and still chose to smoke was nothing to rush to the confessional about. And when quizzed about the ethics of selling arms, he hypothesised that global military contractors may in fact be acting on a moral imperative.''I think you can produce arms morally ... You might say in some cases it is necessary. We are a peaceful country. If we were unarmed that would be an enticement to evil people. The best way to stay as we are is to be strong and effectively armed so I think you could make the case,'' he said.Instead, the cardinal's wrath honed in on corporate fat cat salaries, which were morally suspect, he said. http://www.cathnews.com/article.aspx?aeid=24173

TODAY'S SAINT: ST. LAWRENCE O'TOOLE: NOV. 14
St. Lawrence O'TooleCONFESSORFeast: November 14Information:Feast Day:November 14Born:1128, Castledermot, Kildare, IrelandDied:November 14, 1180, Normandy, FranceCanonized:1225 by Pope Honorius IIIMajor Shrine:St Lawrence's church in Chorley, EnglandConfessor, born about 1128, in the present County Kildare; died 14 November, 1180, at Eu in Normandy; canonized in 1225 by Honorius III.His father was chief of Hy Murray, and his mother one of the Clan O'Byrne. At the age of ten he was taken as a hostage by Dermot McMurrogh, King of Leinster. In 1140 the boy obtained permission to enter the monastic school of Glendalough; in that valley-sanctuary he studied for thirteen years, conspicuous for his piety and learning. So great was his reputation in the eyes of the community that on the death of Abbot Dunlaing, early in 1154, he was unanimously called to preside over the Abbey of St. Kevin. Dermot, King of Leinster, married Mor, sister of St. Lawrence, and, though his character has been painted in dark colours by the native annalists, he was a great friend to the Church. He founded an Austin nunnery, of the reform of Aroaise, in Dublin, with two dependent cells at Kilculliheen (County Kilkenny) and at Aghade (County Carlow), in 1151. He also founded an abbey for Cistercian monks at Baltinglass, and an abbey for Austin canons at Ferns.St. Lawrence, through humility, declined the See of Glendalough in 1160, but on the death of Gregory, Archbishop of Dublin (8 October, 1161), he was chosen to the vacant see, and was consecrated in Christ Church cathedral by Gilla Isu (Gelasius), Primate of Armagh, early in the following year. This appointment of a native-born Irishman and his consecration by the successor of St. Patrick marks the passing of Scandinavian supremacy in the Irish capital, and the emancipation from canonical obedience to Canterbury which had obtained under the Danish bishops of Dublin. St. Lawrence soon set himself to effect numerous reforms, commencing by converting the secular canons of Christ Church cathedral into Aroasian canons (1163). Three years later he subscribed to the foundation charter of All Hallows priory, Dublin (founded by King Dermot), for the same order of Austin canons. Not content with the strictest observance of rules, he wore a hair shirt underneath his episcopal dress, and practised the greatest austerity, retiring for an annual retreat of forty days to St. Kevin's cave, near Glendalough. At the second siege of Dublin (1170) St. Lawrence was active in ministration, and he showed his political foresight by paying due deference to Henry II of England, during that monarch's stay in Dublin. In April, 1178, he entertained the papal legate, Cardinal Vivian, who presided at the Synod of Dublin. He successfully negotiated the Treaty of Windsor, and secured good terms for Roderic, King of Connacht. He attended the Lateran Council in 1179, and returned as legate for Ireland. The holy prelate was not long in Dublin till he deemed it necessary again to visit King Henry II (impelled by a burning charity in the cause of King Roderic), and he crossed to England in September of that year. After three weeks of detention at Abingdon Abbey, St. Lawrence followed the English King to Normandy. Taken ill at the Augustinian Abbey of Eu, he was tended by Abbot Osbert and the canons of St. Victor; before he breathed his last he had the consolation of learning that King Henry had acceded to his request.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary TimeReading 1Mal 3:19-20aLo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the LORD of hosts. But for you who fear my name, there will arisethe sun of justice with its healing rays.
Ps 98:5-6, 7-8, 9Responsorial PsalmR. (cf. 9) The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. With trumpets and the sound of the hornsing joyfully before the King, the LORD.R. The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell in it;let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy.R. The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice. Before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to rule the earth,He will rule the world with justiceand the peoples with equity.R. The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.
2 Thes 3:7-12Reading 2Brothers and sisters:You know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you,nor did we eat food received free from anyone. On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and daywe worked, so as not to burden any of you. Not that we do not have the right. Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you,so that you might imitate us. In fact, when we were with you,we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.We hear that some are conducting themselves among you in adisorderly way,by not keeping busy but minding the business of others. Such people we instruct and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and to eat their own food.
Gospel
Lk 21:5-19
While some people were speaking abouthow the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings,Jesus said, "All that you see here--the days will come when there will not be lefta stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down."Then they asked him,"Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?" He answered,"See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying,'I am he,’ and 'The time has come.’Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections,do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end." Then he said to them,"Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plaguesfrom place to place;and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky."Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governorsbecause of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speakingthat all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.By your perseverance you will secure your lives."
