TODAY'S SAINT: AUG. 13: ST. JOHN BERCHMANS
VATICAN : POPE : PRAYERS FOR VICTIMS OF DISASTERS IN PHILIPPINES - CHINA - IRAN
Vatican Radio REPORT: On Sunday Pope Benedict XVI asked Christians world-wide to pray and show solidarity to the people of three Asian nations devastated by recent natural disasters. In an appeal launched after the midday Marian prayer.
“Dear brothers and sisters,My thoughts go at this time to the people of Asia, especially to the Philippines, the People’s Republic of China, hardest hit by violent rains, as well as those of the North-west Iran, hit by a violent earthquake. These events have caused numerous deaths and injuries, thousands of displaced people and extensive damage. I invite you to join me in prayer for those who have lost their lives and for all the people tried by such devastating calamities. May our solidarity and our support not be lacking to these our brothers and sisters.”.

The death toll from torrential rains that submerged most of the Philippines capital Manila has risen to 85. Nearly two weeks of monsoon rains across the Philippines' main island of Luzon peaked with a 48-hour deluge earlier this week that battered Manila and surrounding regions.

Meanwhile a powerful typhoon also blasted China this week, with 120 km an hour winds that battered Shanghai. Dozens of people were killed and nearly two million people were evacuated.

However, the largest death toll comes from Iran where twin earthquakes levelled entire villages in the north of the country. The official death toll from the Saturday night quakes is 250 people dead and over 2,000, injured. However according to Iranian state television the number is destined to rise.

Over a thousand rescuers worked through the night to free people trapped under rubble and to reach some of the more remote villages affected.

By early afternoon on Sunday, state television was reporting that search operations had ceased. Hundreds of tents have been set up to house the homeless.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that Saturday's first quake at 4:53 p.m. (1223 GMT) had a magnitude of 6.4 and struck 60 kilometers northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 kilometers. The second quake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck 11 minutes later, the U.S.G.S. reported. Its epicenter was 48 kilometers northeast of Tabriz at a depth of 9.8 kilometers.

The quakes hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province. At least six villages were totally leveled, and 133 others sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent.

Some 36 aftershocks jolted the same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea, causing panic among the population.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one earthquake every day on average, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam.

UCAN REPORT:
Leptospirosis a major worry as death toll nears 100

Authorities warned today that flood-devastated communities are now at serious risk from water-borne diseases. The warning was issued as the death toll from flooding that ravaged Metro Manila and surrounding provinces last week rose to almost 100.
The Department of Health is distributing water purification tablets and conducting mass immunization programs to guard against flu, cholera and other diseases. The Philippine Red Cross says sanitation has become “a major problem” as floodwaters recede.
An outbreak of leptospirosis, a bacterial disease caused by exposure to water contaminated by rat urine, is a major concern.
According to government figures, more than 3,300 people were infected and 249 died of the disease following the floods of 2009.
Health officials said the number of leptospirosis victims shot up in January after Typhoon Sendong inundated northern Mindanao.
Doctors say leptospirosis symptoms appear two to 25 days after initial exposure to the urine or tissue of an infected animal. Leptospira bacteria attacks the kidneys, liver or lungs.
Jesus Banate, a 34-year-old driver, has fallen victim to leptospirosis in the latest flooding. He is suffering severe stomach pains, dizziness and nausea.
“Our place is flood-prone. We couldn’t escape from it. There was no choice but to go through it,” Banate told ucanews.com from
his hospital bed in Manila.
In another case, a 62-year-old man died from the disease at San Lazaro Hospital in Manila.
“He arrived at the hospital at a very late stage,” said Dr. Armand Labitag.
Around 3.45 million have been affected by the flooding with more than 410,729 people still living in evacuation centers, according to official estimates.

AFRICA : PARENTS TOLD TO BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY

CISA NEWS REPORT:
Parents-Urged-to-Follow-their-Children’s-Education
NAIROBI, August 3, 2012 (CISA) -Parents have been urged to balance work and family if the ideals of Christian education are to be realized.
Ms Augusta Muthigani, National Executive Secretary Commission for Education and Religious Education at the Kenya Episcopal Conference was addressing a conference on Pope Paul VI and the Church in Africa.
“Families must help children and young people gain knowledge, values , attitudes and skills they need to become adults who can not only take care of themselves, others but also promote the dignity of the human person,” she said.
The conference that was held at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Nairobi Kenya brought together several Cardinals, monsignors, bishops, priests, men and women religious and lay from different parts of Africa.
Ms Muthigani stressed the importance of collaboration between the family and school in the growth and development of children saying it will to a great extent “determine their formation in character and performance in academic.”
She however noted that the Church needs to support the parents and guardians by providing institutions that create a supportive, safe and nurturing environment for children to grow in.
She also urged parents to embrace social media noting that technology is evolving fast and children are communicating through tweeting, face booking and texting. There is need for teachers and parents to be exposed to the use of the social media in order to be able to relate to the young people at the same level and monitor them.
“Is it not time to evangelize to the African child and youth through the social media?” she posed
She said the use of social media in catechetical instructions would enlighten and strengthen faith in the youth using activities that interest and engage them fully.
She noted that in order to achieve Christian education as spelt out by Pope Paul VI in the declaration on family and Christian education, there would be need for the wholesome development of the child through cultures that promotes family unit which is the first school of social values.

HYMN.
O gloriosa Virginum,
Sublimis inter sidera,
Qui te creavit, parvulum
Lactente nutris ubere.
Quod Heva tristis abstulit,
Tu reddis almo germine:
Intrent ut astra flebiles,
Coeli recludis cardines.
Tu regis alti janua,
Et aula lucis fulgida:
Vitam datam per Virginem,
Gentes redemptae plaudite.
Jesu, tibi sit gloria,
Qui natus es de Virgine,
Cum Patre, et almo Spiritu
In sempiterna saecula. Amen.
TRANSLATION.
O Queen of all the Virgin choir,
Enthroned above the starry sky;
Who with pure milk from thy own breast
Thy own Creator didst supply.
What man hath lost in hapless Eve,
Thy sacred womb to man restores;
Thou to the sorrowing here beneath
Hast open’d Heaven’s eternal doors.
Hail, O refulgent Hall of light!
Hail, Gate sublime of Heaven’s high King!
Through thee redeem’d to endless life,
Thy praise let all the nations sing.
O Jesu! born of Virgin bright,
Immortal glory be to Thee;
Praise to the Father infinite,
And Holy Ghost eternally.

GLORY OF MARY AFTER DEATH.
For the crown which decks her brow.
Let us meditate how glorious Mary is in heaven by reason of the royal crown wherewith her Divine Son hath crowned her, and for the full knowledge which she now has of the deep mysteries of God, past, present, and to come; and, full of veneration for the incomparable honour bestowed upon our Queen, let us have recourse to her and say:
i. Queen unrivalled, who in heaven on high dost enjoy the high glory of being crowned by thy Divine Son with a royal diadem; help us to share thy matchless virtues, and ask for us that, purified in heart, we may be made worthy to be crowned with thee in Paradise.
Three Ave Marias.
ii. Queen unrivalled in the full knowledge granted thee of all things upon earth; for thy own glory’s sake obtain pardon for our past evil deeds, that we may never offend again by froward tongue or wanton thought.
Three Ave Marias.
iii. Queen unrivalled, whose desire it is to see men pure and clean of heart, that so they may be made worthy of thy God; obtain for us forgiveness of our sins, and help us, that all our looks, words, and deeds may please his heavenly Majesty.
Three Ave Maria’s.
Let us then purify our hearts, in order that we may be worthy to give praise to Mary; and to the glory she possesses in that bright crown which decks her royal brow, let us add humble tokens of our love, while with the eighth choir we joyfully sing:
The Litany of Our Lady :

Matthew 17: 22 - 27
22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men,
23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." And they were greatly distressed.
24 When they came to Caper'na-um, the collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, "Does not your teacher pay the tax?"
25 He said, "Yes." And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?"
26 And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free.
27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."

TODAY'S SAINT: AUG. 13: ST. JOHN BERCHMANS

ST. JOHN BERCHMANS : PATRON OF ALTAR BOYS

Information:
Feast Day:
August 13
Born:
13 March 1599 at Driest, Brabant, Belgium
Died:
12 August 1621 at Rome, Italy
Canonized:
1888 by Pope Leo XIII
Major Shrine:
Sant'Ignazio
Patron of:
altar boys, Oblate novices, young people
This young saint of the Society of Jesus was born in Flanders, the oldest of five children. He grew up in an atmosphere of political turmoil caused by a religious war between the Catholic and Protestant sections of the Netherlands. He studied at the Gymnasium at Diest and worked as a servant in the household of Canon John Froymont at Malines in order to continue his studies.
In 1615, the Jesuits opened a college at Malines, and St. John Berchmans was one of the first to enter. He was an energetic student and was a leader among the students. In 1616, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Malines and came under the influence of Father Antoine Sucquet. The young Berchmans developed a strong and deep spirituality based on the loving practice of fidelity. St. Aloysius of Gonzaga was his spiritual model, and he was influenced as well by the example of the Jesuit English martyrs.
It was his realistic appreciation for the value of ordinary things, a characteristic of the Flemish mystical tradition, that constituted his holiness. He was affable, kind, and endowed with an outgoing personality that endeared him to everyone. In 1618, he was sent to Rome to study philosophy and was an exceptional student. He requested after ordination to become a chaplain in the army, hoping to be martyred on the battlefield.
In the summer of 1619, the intense heat of Rome started to affect his health and he began progressively to get weaker. The doctors could not determine what was wrong, and for two years he was continually sick, requiring medical care, and as the summer of 1621 came, it was clear that he would not last long. He died peacefully on August 13, 1621, and numerous miracles were attributed to him at the time of his funeral.
He was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1865 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. His body lies in the church of St. Ignatius in Rome, where Aloysius of Gonzaga is also buried.
