ASIA: TIBET: POLITICAL LEADER OF TIBET AGREES WITH POPE ON PEACE
Dharamsala (AsiaNews) – The people of Tibet and the Tibetan Government-in-exile “entirely agree with His Holiness the Pope that religious freedom is the path of peace,” said Samdhong Rinpoche, the exiled Tibetan prime minister (kalon tripa) as he spoke to AsiaNewsabout the papal message for World Peace Day, traditionally marked on 1 January.
In the message, titled ‘Religious freedom, path to peace,’ the Pontiff said, “Sadly, the year now ending has again been marked by persecution, discrimination, terrible acts of violence and religious intolerance.”
According to Prof Rinpoche, it is particularly appropriate “that His Holiness the Pope has announced the 2nd Congregation of religious heads at Assisi to discuss how they can promote world peace. This positive approach will herald peace among religions, hence among nations.”
The Tibetan people, the prime minister added, is deeply “anguished at the violence and suffering unleashed on Christians in the Middle East during the holy season of Christmas. All violence is bad, but violence on the basis of religious domination is most deplorable.”
The purpose of religion, he concluded, “is to lift up humanity from the evils of greed, anger, deceit, power, [and] violence. [. . .] It is most dehumanising when humanity uses religion for division and violence.”
EUROPE: GREAT BRITAIN: CHILDREN BEGIN YEAR OF PRAYER WITH MARY
CATHOLIC HERALD REPORT: Children at St Mary’s primary school at Congleton in Cheshire start year of prayer for Mary
Year 6 children from St Mary’s primary school in Congleton join in Marian prayer
The Scripture passage in Bishop Mark Davies’s first pastoral letter to Shrewsbury Diocese on October 3 2010 was “Lord, increase our faith” (Luke 17:5).
Now Bishop Davies has invited the faithful of the diocese to join in prayer with Mary for a year which will end on the November 21 2011, the memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the end of the year Shrewsbury diocese will be re-dedicated to Our Lady, Help of Christians. For the children of St Mary’s primary school at Congleton in Cheshire East the year began with Fr Bill Kilkenny celebrating Mass in school for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
Mass was followed by an assembly during which each year group presented aspects of the life of Mary through drama, poetry, music and prayer. Children in Reception and Year 6 showed their joint artwork: a mosaic of Our Lady and an image in batik. Year 1 shared their pictures of the life of Our Lady, which included “Mary sewing clothes for Jesus” and “Mary going to see Elizabeth and the baby John the Baptist”. Year 2’s dramatisation of the finding of the child Jesus in the temple highlighted how worried Mary and Joseph must have been when they realised Jesus was missing. Year 6 acted out the wedding feast at Cana and explained that this is one of the Mysteries of Light.
The children’s presentations were interspersed with beautiful singing such as “Immaculate Mary”, “Sing of a Girl” and the little known traditional carol, “The Seven Joys of Mary”.
Helen Pile, headteacher, said: “This is going to be such a special year for our school and the whole diocese. St Mary’s was established in 1858, the same year that Our Lady appeared to Bernadette.
“Parents, parishioners, staff and governors all commented upon the wonderful atmosphere during our Mass and assembly last week.”
AUSTRALIA: PRINCESS GIVES BIRTH TO TWINS- HAPPY WITH LARGE FAMILY
Princess Mary has given birth to a boy and a girl at a Copenhagen hospital after going into labour yesterday morning local time.
NEWS.COM.AU REPORT: The births, which came yesterday morning, local time (about 9.30pm AEDT) at Rigshospitalet, had been much anticipated with two false alarms this week.
Crown Prince Frederik told the gathered press at the hospital that following about four hours of labour, the boy cane first, followed half an hour later by the girl.
A relieved Crown Prince Frederik said the births went well and there was no nail-biting.
He said there were two small hearts to watch now and it was almost like the first time when he became a dad.
Both mother and children are doing well and he and Mary are very happy.
The girl is measuring 46cm and weighs 2554 grams while the boy weighs 2674 grams and measures 47cm.
Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary already have two children, Prince Christian, five, and Princess Isabella, three.
The Tasmanian-born member of the Danish royal family was joined by her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, at Rigshospitalet, Amalienborg Palace spokeswoman Lene Balleby said.

AFRICA: NIGERIA- ARCHBISHOP SPEAKS ON ATTACKS
“We need to be careful not to rush to conclusions,” said Archbishop Kaigama. “So I think that the authorities must conduct a thorough investigation not excluding any avenue, to shed light on the recent events in different areas of Nigeria, from the attacks on Christian churches in Maiduguri, to the incidents in Jos and the bombing in Abuja.”
“My impression is that these acts of violence are part of a plan to destabilize Nigeria, and that someone from outside the country is lighting the fire,” said Archbishop Kaigama. “It is a feeling based on various facts. I note two fundamental differences between the attacks at Christmas and the clashes that occurred in the area of Jos recently. In the first place, the motivations: as I have explained on other occasions (see Fides 25/03/2010), the riots in and around Jos had a religious component that was mixed with other motives, ie. the frustrations of unemployed youth, the rivalry between pastoralists and farmers, and ethnic tensions between the indigenous and immigrants from other regions of the Country. The attacks at Christmas, rather, have a clear religious significance because they wanted to hit these important symbols of Christianity during the most sacred celebrations, along with Easter. Secondly, in past clashes, bladed weapons and some rifles were used. In this case, rather, explosives were used. The bombs were probably made on site, but I wonder who taught the terrorists how to produce them. So I think that recent events go beyond Nigeria,” said the Archbishop of Jos. (LM)

TODAY'S GOSPEL: JAN. 8: JOHN 3: 22-30
John 3: 22 - 30 | |
22 | After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized. |
23 | John also was baptizing at Ae'non near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized. |
24 | For John had not yet been put in prison. |
25 | Now a discussion arose between John's disciples and a Jew over purifying. |
26 | And they came to John, and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, here he is, baptizing, and all are going to him." |
27 | John answered, "No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven. |
28 | You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. |
29 | He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full. |
30 | He must increase, but I must decrease." |
