AFRICA: NIGERIA: CATHOLICS LAMENT OVER KIDNAPPING
All Africa report: To seek divine intervention to the many vices ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, insecurity and bad leadership in parts of the South east, the Catholics of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, comprising of the Dioceses of Owerri, Orlu, Okigwe, Ahiara, Aba and Umuahia trooped out in their thousands to protest the hardship hoodlums and bad leadership had inflicted on the people of the area on Friday. The programme which took place in all the dioceses of the Province simultaneously, started in Owerri at about 8.00 am at Villa Mariae, through Wetheral Road via Bank Road and terminated at Maria Assumpta Cathedral at about 12.30pm. The procession was led by Archbishop Anthony Obinna with other clergies and Christian faithfuls in attendance. The faithfuls wore black all-through depicting signs that evil has enveloped the South East as a result of kidnapping, armed robbery, injustice and bad leadership. During the prayer procession, the Catholic faithfuls prayed and called on Almighty God to intervene to free the people from all the vices. They also prayed to God to lead the oppressed people into peace, justice, fair-play, and good leadership which they deserve. In a brief Penitential rite with the theme: God saw their Good effort to renounce their Evil ways and Relented taken from Jona 3:1-10 by Rev. Fr. Kingsley Njoku, he reminded Christians the effort of the people of Nineveh in calling upon God to forgive their sins, and God answered them because they showed proof of repentance.Archbishop Obinna lamented the state of insecurity in the South East and the level of anxiety among the people in the face of various evils. He said it was the situation that informed the demonstration which was called (Provincial Day)."The recent acts of kidnapping between Imo and Abia states have only confirmed our directive. Besides, another set of elections is coming up soon with all its uncertainties. That is why we are resuming the prayer for upright voting", the cleric said. http://allafrica.com/stories/201009130779.html

AUSTRALIA: BISHOPS CALL FOR PEACE THOUGH DEVELOPMENT
Cath News report: Peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but rather entails the true development of people, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference said in a statement for the 2010 Social Justice Sunday. The statement pointed out the rise in violence in Australia among drunken professional sportsmen, road rage, late-night assaults and armed robberies, according to an AAP report in the Sydney Morning Herald. The statement addresses the growing social problem at all levels, including in the home, communities and across national structures. It cites incidents of schoolyard and cyber bullying, and says the "recent demonisation of asylum seekers as a threat to our national security" is an example of how violence occurs in divisive political rhetoric and sensationalist media reporting."Assaults, which constitute the bulk of all crime, have increased by over 50 per cent in the decade to 2007," the statement says."We hear increasing reports of road rage, of bashings fuelled by drugs and alcohol, or armed robberies on trains or in shops, of professional sportsmen involved in violence in pubs and clubs, of players and umpires being assaulted even at junior sporting events."The statement urges people to build peace and to identify and speak out against exclusion and oppression. It will be distributed and presented to churches around the nation on Social Justice on Sunday, celebrated on September 26. http://www.cathnews.com/article.aspx?aeid=23260

AMERICA: CHILE: SEPTEMBER IS BIBLE MONTH IN LATIN AMERICA
Agenzia Fides REPORT– The Chilean Bishops' Conference has opened a section on its website to spread the word on "Bible Month" in Chile, which is also celebrated in other Latin American nations in September. The goal is to promote activities to help people become more familiar with the Word of God.According to information gathered by Fides, the Bishops' Conference has suggested some practical proposals for everyone such as the daily reading of biblical texts from the liturgy, which is a great help in deepening in the Word of God. In this way, everyone can join the Church throughout the world in praying and reflecting on the same texts. The bishops ask: "Have you ever read an entire Gospel from start to finish? It is very interesting to discover the story of Jesus' life written by each evangelist. Many details and relationships between the texts that each evangelist uses are discovered when one reads the entire Gospel the whole way through.”After these initial motivations, the website also offers information regarding the Bible in Chile (Commission for Biblical Animation, messages from the bishops on the identity and mission of biblical animation), the Bible in Latin America (CEBIPAL and its work), the contributions of ABP (National Commission for the Biblical Pastoral Ministry) to the continental mission, resources and links on the Bible, an explanation on all that is implied in "September, Month of the Bible," a statement with links and special articles about the Bible, the Lectio Divina, and a collection of biblical reflections. http://www.fides.org/aree/news/newsdet.php?idnews=27408&lan=eng

ASIA: INDIA: CATHOLIC SCHOOL BURNT
Asia News report: The Good Shepherd School in Pulwama targeted; attack against Christ School and Christ Mohalla School in Pooch Jammu. The Catholic school had already been targeted in 2003. Kashmir Autonomist leader defends Christians, but fundamentalism is growing in the region. The founder of the Good Shepherd, Fr Jim Borst had received a deportation order. Curfew continues in the region. All flights to and from Srinagar are suspended for three days. Srinagar (AsiaNews) - A Catholic school was burned last night and two other Protestant schools were attacked in the province of Jammu and Kashmir, following the "Burn the Koran" campaign launched by the Rev. Terry Jones in the U.S.. Yesterday morning a Protestant school and a church was burned. The Bishop of Jammu-Srinagar, Mgr. Peter Celestine called for a return to peace in the region. "Religious leaders – he old AsiaNews - have a responsibility to bring peace, tolerance and coexistence."Last night at 7.30, an angry mob set fire to the Good Shepherd School in Pulwama in response to the attempt to desecrate the Koran. Unlike yesterday morning with the Protestant school, this time the police intervened in force, reducing damage to the prestigious institution. There are reports that Muslim groups have attempted to attack two Protestant schools, the Christ School and Christ Mohalla School in Pooch Jammu. The situation is tense and curfew continues to be imposed the area. All movement is prohibited and it is risky to venture outside of homes during the day.All flights to and from Srinagar are suspended for three days because of the unrest caused by the "Burn the Koran" campaign, which here however also takes on an anti-Indian and anti-American sentiment. Yesterday the clashes between police and thousands of demonstrators caused at least 17 dead and 80 wounded.Bishop Peter Celestine expresses all his concern to AsiaNews: "I am deeply saddened by this mob incited violence, we are a micro minority community [0.0014% of the population], which is peaceful and tolerant. Additionally, we give good witness through our schools. And this school was targeted last night, yesterday the Christian Mission Society School, in Tangmarg was completely burnt down, and the resulting violence led to many deaths. Peace must be restored, we religious leaders have a responsibility to lead peace and tolerance and coexistence"According to the prelate, the small Catholic community has always had "cordial relations with our Muslim brothers and with the authorities." To confirm this, yesterday the attack on the Protestant school was ordered by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, placed under house arrest by Indian authorities. "I call on all Muslims - he said - to protect members of minorities and their religious sites. We must maintain at all costs the ancient brotherhood and harmony between communities, for which Kashmir is known throughout the world. "It should however be remembered that over the years the struggle for the independence of Kashmir have been infiltrated by radical Muslim groups, giving the project a fundamentalist stamp and linking it to the struggles in Iran and the Middle East. Yesterday in the demonstrations anti-Indian slogans were chanted, but also anti-US and anti-Israel, a fact that, quite new in the political landscape of India. The attempt to Islamize Kashmir, eliminating other minorities - Sikhs, Hindus and Christians - is growing. The same Good Shepherd School, attacked last night, was the subject of violence in past years, since its founding in 1997. In 2003 it was twice attacked by Islamic fundamentalists in the same year, its founder, Fr Jim Borst, was struck with the charge of proselytism and threatened with expulsion. According to the fundamentalists, the priest convinced the school children to become Christians. In July, Fr. Brost, the only Mill Hill missionary who lives in the area since 1963, received a deportation order, even though four months earlier the central authorities had renewed his permit to stay until 2014.

TODAY'S SAINT: EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
The Exaltation of the Holy CrossFeast: September 14Information:Feast Day:September 14The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross sprang into existence at Rome at the end of the seventh century. Allusion is made to it during the pontificate of Sergius I (687-701) but, as Dom Bäumer observes, the very terms of the text (Lib. Pontif., I, 374, 378) show that the feast already existed. It is, then, inexact, as has often been pointed out, to attribute the introduction of it to this pope. The Gallican churches, which, at the period here referred to, do not yet know of this feast of the 14th September, have another on the 3rd of May of the same signification. It seems to have been introduced there in the seventh century, for ancient Gallican documents, such as the Lectionary of Luxeuil, do not mention it; Gregory of Tours also seems to ignore it. According to Mgr. Duchesne, the date seems to have been borrowed from the legend of the Finding of the Holy Cross (Lib. Pontif., I, p. cviii). Later, when the Gallican and Roman Liturgies were combined, a distinct character was given to each feast, so as to avoid sacrificing either. The 3rd of May was called the feast of the Invention of the Cross, and it commemorated in a special manner Saint Helena's discovery of the sacred wood of the Cross; the 14th of September, the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, commemorated above all the circumstances in which Heraclius recovered from the Persians the True Cross, which they had carried off. Nevertheless, it appears from the history of the two feasts, which we have just examined, that that of the 13th and 14th of September is the older, and that the commemoration of the Finding of the Cross was at first combined with it.

John 3: 13 - 1713No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man.14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up,15that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."16For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.17For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. http://jceworld.blogspot.com/2010/09/todays-gospel-john-3-13-17.html
